1987 Mercedes-Benz 190-Series

These were really great cars- best power to weight ratio of any of the OM6- - series Diesels. In fact they were so good they have all had the wheels driven off of them, usually coming on the market after 300, 400 thousand miles or more. This beauty was hiding in western Illinois with a blown head gasket. I acquired it last fall and verified that the coolant had been drained, so there was no coolant sitting in the cylinders. After removing the head I verified that the cylinders were in excellent condition and also that there was no cylinder ridge at all and cross hatch was evident, further verification that the odometer was accurate. So, new gasket, new head bolts, new glow plugs and injector nozzles and the engine runs as new. Starts immediately, has great power and no black smoke. Has not used any oil. Along the way, new water pump & T-stat, voltage regulator and serpentine belt. Fuel tank was rusty so I sent it out to be professionally scoured. No further issues with the tank. The Cruise works!! The original VDO Cruise that usually didn't make it through the new car warranty! Clock works too. The A/C is COLD. Why? Because the original charge of R-12 is still there! No Leaks! I put a new blower motor in because it was doing it's usual bird calls. The Tempmatic climate control is working as it should. Vacuum supply is excellent, no leaky lines or actuators. No modern car throws the volume of COLD (or fresh) air out the center vent that these 190's did. Nobody does it better. Of course, transmission shifts flawlessly with that nice vacuum supply! The tires were badly dry rotted, so it got a near new set of Michelins with about 95%. 195/75/15 on the original wheels. Drives and handles as new, and because of the low mileage the suspension and body are very taught. New rear pads and rotors, some other odds and ends. Mechanically, drive this car anywhere. And remember that these Bosch pumps were the most tolerant for Biofuels including veggie grease. I'd hate to see it happen though, renewable Diesel is so much better and now a widely available fuel with the best Carbon equation of any vehicle fuel, and that includes electricity! I will have some type of sound system at time of sale. It has an elaborate system with a preamp, main amp, and subwoofers and I am still dinking with it. If I can't resuscitate I will at minimum put in a modern head unit with USB.Things it needs: NothingThings it could use: a repaint, a dash cap, some fabric trimming around the door openings.Windshield has a star crack about the size of a quarter, up high on the RH side. Hood pad is deteriorated. Fuel tank sender won't read higher than 3/4 tank but reads below. Reserve light works.Shocks appear to be original, so of course a new set would be noticed. that's about it!
I might be game for assisting with delivery- have a strong case of white line fever after this lockdown- we can discuss it. Neither is a trade out of the question. Like the Realtors say, present your offer.
