The vehicle was originally purchased new from Herb Chambers Mercedes-Benz in Sommervile Mass in August of 1992 for $97,800 and remained with the original owner from 1992 until May 2019 (27 years) when I purchased it.
The car was meticulously maintained and garage-kept this entire time. I purchased the vehicle from the owner's estate. His wife described it as her husband's real love. Documents I was able to obtain with the purchase include the original Bill Of Sale, the original Window Sticker, 27 years of service records and several original Sales Brochures. There are three sets of keys (one is valet and only one has batteries) and a radio removal tool, all of which will be included in the sale.
Clear Mass title in my name.
I have driven the car for about 7-800 miles at this point - weekend trips. The mileage may change a bit more as I continue to drive it on occasion. The car starts, runs and drives very well and without hesitation. Excellent pickup and very powerful (5.0 liter fuel injected V8). Engine produced 315HP and 347 ft-lb torque from factory and picks up quite fast on the highway. Gears are smooth and the engine feels extremely comfortable at any speed. My max speed on this car has been about 80MPH. It loves the 70-80 range and it is very fast getting from 50 to 80mph. I have a couple of driving videos on vimeo (links below).
All functions in car work perfectly, except for a couple of things noted below. AC blows cold, heaters work amazingly, all electronic seat adjustments front and rear work perfect, seat heaters front and back work perfect, rear headrest electronic controls work perfect, sunroof works perfect with no leaks. All windows work perfect. It is really an amazing car.
This 500SEL is all original and, per the service records, was maintained by Mercedes service with OEM parts. Even the first aid kit is in-place and tools. Also included is a full spare.

As noted in the service/maintenance spreadsheet, there was some bumper damage that required repair/repaint. There are a few spots where touch-up paint was applied (either by the original owner or the servicing dealer). Unfortunately, the owner's wife was not able to provide detail as to the bumper work.
There is a little rust spot at the trunk key lock, visible in the pictures and the walkaround video. There are also a couple of spots where touch-up was applied at one point but I do not believe there is rust there. These spots are also visible in the pictures.
Service records are incredibly extensive. As far as I know, I have every single service record from purchase to today - 27 years worth. I have prepared a comprehensive spreadsheet listing every item with date, mileage, description and cost, which is shown in the pictures and will be included in the service folder with the sale. The original owner was absolutely crazy about this car and babied it without regard for cost. During his ownership from 1992 to 2019, he only took it to Mercedes dealer service and only a few times more recently to a non-dealer Mercedes specialty shop close to him. Pictures of the spreadsheet are included, and all service records will be included with the sale. I transferred all the info on the carfax report to the spreadsheet below, as best I could.
Service I've had done to get the car ready for the road (June/July 2019):
- Brand new battery- New rear brake light bulbs
- Oil and Filter change
- Fluids inspection - All fluids were inspected and confirmed ok, the Hydraulic fluid needed topping off (suspension).
- Overall inspection which noted two items that were addressed at that time: right side ball joint and a brake rotor was a little warped.
- After about a month, the car developed a tapping noise when idling which I tracked to a faulty oiler connector (common for these cars as I found out). The original oiler connectors were still in place. I took the opportunity to also replace, besides the 16 oiler connectors, the timing chain guides on both sides, valve cover gaskets, the distributors, all spark plugs, and spark plug wires.
- The fuel pump relay was also replaced because once or twice I did not hear the pump activate at morning start-up.
- Left side control arms due to a 'creaking' noise
I am selling the car because I misjudged the size relative to the available space in my garage and I don't like to leave cars out in the snow/rain during the winter. For now, it is garage kept (with all my snow, lawn equipment, power washer, extra wheels, etc., moved out to make room).
I am happy to help coordinate shipping, but all shipping related costs remain the responsibility of the Buyer. Within New England, I see no reason why the vehicle cannot be driven to its new home (thus saving on transport costs).
This is a 1993 car and I have provided all the info I believe I can and have represented the car as best I can. Nothing is being hidden. Please ask any questions before bidding since the sale is final and there are no specific or implied warranties. I would be happy to share additional specific photos if you need.
What I am aware of that is not 100%:
- Rear right side power door close assist, close closes without any problem when shut normally... it's just that the power assist doesn't
- Front passenger door lock doesn't work with the remote- Only one remote has batteries. The second does not (haven't bought them) and the third is a valet key.
- Radio reception not great- Haven't tested the CD changer
If you have any issues accessing the videos or the additional pictures, let me know.
Thank you for looking and I look forward to your offers.
