Description:

1976 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series

1976 Mercedes-Benz 240D, W115 chassis (last year of this chassis/body style in the 240D). Four speed manual transmission, fuel injected, four disc brakes, automatic (vacuum) locks, brand new tires, brand new Bosch starter. The car has less than 62,000 original miles (still adding some), confirmed by both mechanic shops I have used. These diesels engines go 500,000+ miles consistently. It has a heater, but this one did not come with A/C from the factory, though there is room for a compressor and controls inside the dash should you want to install an A/C. It is not a fast car in first and second gears, but once it is in 3rd and 4th it drives like a dream.

Purchased April 2016 from the original owner's son, this car was my daily driver for most of the last three years, until I had to purchase a newer car for work. I do not need two cars, so I want to pass this on to someone who will continue taking care of it. The car came from New Hampshire. The seller told me it was garage kept and not driven in the winter starting around 1980 to avoid the corrosive effects of salted roads. There is some corrosion, however, on the front floor boards and the filler tube that goes to the fuel tank (I had the fuel tank removed and cleaned and all three fuel filters replaced in 2016 as a precaution), but the car is otherwise in good shape as far as rust goes. The Louisiana sun has begun to oxidize the paint.

Receipts for all work I have had done to the car will come with sale (plus miscellaneous parts).

I change the oil and oil filters regularly, using Shell Rotella T4 motor oil (no synthetic because apparently it can damage seals on these older vehicles). There are still plenty of these 240Ds on the road worldwide, so mechanical parts are available and way cheaper than most people think. My mechanic gets parts the same day, and I buy from pelicanparts.com for any work (and oil changes) I do on my own. MercedesSource is also an amazing website for harder to find parts, video tutorials, and instructions for common fixes. Ebay has trim-type parts available as do a few other websites. These cars are mechanically straightforward and not difficult to work on, especially after doing a bit of online research on any little tricks you may want to know.

Here is a list of work I had done to the car (paperwork will come with sale):

June 2016

New clutch hydraulic hose, system bled; fuel tank removed and cleaned; new fuel filters; injectors flushed; valve adjustment and new valve cover gasket installed; new brake pads and rotors; wheel bearings repacked, wheel bearing races replaced; new window gaskets (front and rear) as a precaution;

August 2016

Bushings on shift linkages replaced for smoother shifting of gears

November 2016

New voltage regulator and battery

Original radio serviced by Becker AutoSound in New Jersey

April 2017

New clutch kit installed

April 2019

Left rear brake caliper replaced; custom steel brake line; both rear brake hoses and pads replaced

June 2019

New tires

October 2019

New Bosch starter

If I were to keep the car, I would:

Address rust on front floor boards (rear is ok)

Replace control arm bushings

Replace/fix front passenger side window regulator

Have the paint restored

Have radiator cleaned (if you go over 70 mph the temperature goes up, but comes right back down when you slow down. My mechanic says the radiator is just not working at 100% and needs a cleaning. It still works fine in the city and on the highway. I drove it on I-10 every day to go to work and back home, with no problems).

This car is ready to be your daily driver. I am not interested in selling a car full of surprises, so when you buy this car you are getting all my knowledge of this car and experience with it, and I will make myself available any time after the sale for any questions.

I'll work with you to be available for vehicle pickup/shipping. Vehicle is available for inspection/test drive prior to auction closing. Please ask questions. I have done my best to describe the car here but it is the buyer's responsibility to determine vehicle condition.
