1971 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series 280s

First hitting the market in 1965, the W108 chassis was an extremely successful model for Mercedes. Featuring the latest in technology and styling combined with superb build quality that was second to none, it was the W108 that really put Mercedes on the map as a manufacturer of the best cars in the world, a title it has held ever since. Available in long or short wheelbases and with a variety of six and eight cylinder engines, the W108 was a huge seller, with over 383,000 examples having been produced. This chassis has become quite desirable in the last 10 years, as collectors realize the historical significance and quality of the chassis. While models such as the 450SEL 6.3L V8 easily bring six figure prices, you can still find affordable examples on the market.
This particular car is a 1971 280S model. It features a twin carbureted 2.8L M130 Inline six that produces about 130hp and is mated to a smooth 4 speed automatic transmission. This car was part of a large collection of Mercedes in the Chicago area where it was driven sparingly and was kept indoors. It was last registered for road use in 2011 and we purchased the car as a non running example covered in dust. Despite not having run in a few years, the car was in excellent shape cosmetically and just needed a few things to run. The car was gone through, fluids changed, and a number of parts replaced. Work done includes a full tune up, replaced alternator, new ignition, conversion from points to magnetic pickup, fixed gauges, carb cleaning and adjustments, new brake pads and hoses, new temp sensor, replaced heater controls, rebuilt turn signal relay, new fuse box, and trans adjustment. Mechanically, the car is very well sorted and has been daily driven and been on a few cross state trips over the last few months. The engine runs very well and doesn't appear to burn or leak and the transmission is very smooth and engages gears quickly. The suspension is compliant and the brakes stop the car confidently. Lights, wipers, locks, power windows, and gauges work, with the exception of the drivers window that slips a bit as well as a non functioning clock and a radio that has not been wired up. The car is also a rare column shift automatic and features a somewhat of a full bench seat.
Cosmetically, the car is very solid driver condition. The tan paint is nice overall but appears to have had some touch up work in the past. There are also a few scratches and chips here and there. A solid 10 foot car. Chrome is in good shape, glass is in good shape, window seals are decent, and the doors close with a satisfying thunk. Because of its past, this car is extremely clean when it comes to rust despite being a northern car. The car has excellent floors, undercarriage, door seams, and fenders, all typical W108 rust spots. There is one minor rust spot on the passenger front fender the size of a pinky finger as well as a few bits of surface rust on the front from rock chips. Other cosmetic needs include needing new carpets, sill trim, a few small cracks on the dash, faded wood, and a little peeling in the rear headliner.
This car is easily one of the cleanest cars in this price range in the region and you'll be hard pressed to find anything wrong with it. The car has been a reliable daily driver and gets constant compliments wherever you go. I'd rate the car as a solid 8/10 cosmetically and would not hesitate to drive this car across the country at anytime. The primary reason for selling is to help fund a move to another state. The car will come with a few minor parts as well as the original wheels and color matched hubcaps. Car sits on 14in Bundt alloy wheels and older tires from 2013. I'd definitely recommend new tires if you plan on driving it cross country.
The car is an excellent driver condition and would make a wonderful cruiser for summer. Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions. I need to move this thing soon and am asking $5500 or best off. Clean title and ready for a new home! Thanks for checking it out!
If you're looking to fly in and drive it home, I'd be more than happy to pick you up from the GRR airport!
