1958 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series

1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S (Ponton Sedan)

This has been an excellent car for me.I bought it 13 years ago and have never regretted it, even in the early days when it just needed so much.

Having been a Californian car it has very little rust. The worst is in the trunk where I treated it 13 years ago, and just put a piece of board and carpet over the center. You can make your own decisions about how far you want to go with this car.For me I kind of like having a little patina.Too perfect makes it hard to use, and I like driving this car. For at least three years this was my daily driver.I owned a coffee shop at the time.I noticed that whenever the car was outside it drew in a lot of customers; I drove it a-lot.

I did modify the ignition system in the way the magazine Octane advised on "using a classic every day".I switched out the mechanical petrol pump for an electric unit, installed an electronic distributor, and switched out the generator for an alternator.I also made sure the brakes are in perfect order. This car starts right up, and can drive all day down the freeway.I still prefer it to a modern car, its suspension is silky smooth compared to my 98 420s.However as I get older I find that I need AC in the summer, and it seems mean to take it out in the rain.So lately it has been getting less and less mileage.Last year I only used it for about 500 miles.

Anyway, if you are looking for a great old car that turns heads, and is fun to drive this is the car.I haven't regretted it, you won't either.
