Description:

1970 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series 280SE

1970 Mercedes Benz 280SE. W108 USA spec car, equipped with a four speed manual transmission, with floor shift. Factory A/C with power steering. Left side exterior mirror. Hand crank windows, no sunroof. Originally this car was silver gray metallic with black vinyl interior, but at some point the car was re painted to this off-white with blue velour interior and gray carpeting. I am told this car has spent its life in southern California, with the last few years being stored in Palm Desert, CA; and then in Santa Maria, CA since 2016. Some rust is present as shown in the pictures, but the only rust holes are in the left trunk well. The rest of the rust is on the surface. The left rear quarter panel has rust bubbles along the molding, but the next image shows the back of the quarter panel, and you can see it is clean. The floor pans and undercarriage are all very clean and mostly rust free. I have applied rust converting primer and matched touch up paint to most of the surface rust areas. I am a Mercedes mechanic and I acquired this car recently in non running condition. I have installed a universal fuel pump with new hoses at the tank. I cleaned the in-tank screen and the engine started right up. I replaced the clutch slave cylinder and the flex hose and the clutch now operates. I flushed the brake fluid and bled the brakes; the front calipers are sticky but operational. The water pump bearing is seized. I have provided a new pump and belt that are included with the car. I replaced the shiftier assembly with one from a W123 that interchanges, but the shift handle will need to be transferred over. I have included all the old parts in the trunk. I have not tested any of the accessories in the car, including the A/C, heater, radio, hazard button, lights, etc. The matching tires have zero miles and are about a year old. I also installed a Mercedes brand battery. This car has a single key that operates the ignition, doors, glove box and fuel cap. The car will start and drive but only for short periods because of the water pump issue; however it can be driven onto a trailer for transport. I have a clear California title. This car is a good candidate for a full restoration, or one could bring the mechanical maintenance up to date, install seat covers and enjoy the car as-is. Andrew 8057205057
