Mercedes E320 Coupe 1994 (W124)
I have over 100 HD photos. If there's anything specific you want to know or see, please message me.Please note: If you're as serious about this car as me and read what's written below, you'll understand why I won't entertain silly offers. I want to sell the car, but only at a fair price. Please don't waste our time.
This is a rare Mercedes Benz w124 coupe. If you're looking at this I assume you know about the car, its rarity and the fact that they were the last of the coach-built Mercedes. This car is the model that followed the 300CE and so has a number of upgrades, including am improved engine (M104) with OBD2 port so fault codes can be read (this car has no fault codes and the sale includes a Mercedes W124 OBD fault code reader). The history will show two accidents. Both are cosmetic (glass and wing mirror replacement. I have the receipts showing the work done at the Mercedes main dealer).
About the carI bought this car to give me a 4 seat classic MB having owned a number of 4 door w124s (and own a few other classic MBs - I know them well and think they're superb cars). I bought it to keep, hence I've spent a considerable amount of money on its restoration (which was completed with a respray in its original color). I hadn't planned to sell.
I've summarized the key elements of the restoration below. Unfortunately, circumstances have changed and I now need to sell the car. I spent 10 months looking for the right car. I am the second owner and have owned the car for about 2 years. The previous owners were the original owners. The car was bought by a family in NY, (for the mother), and passed to their daughter when she graduated from college (history will show that that the car has been transferred within the family; I have the documentation to show this). I bought the car from her having known her husband. The car was in DC before I bought it back to NJ, where it is now. Although the last owners loved the car, they didn't look after it well. Some rust had crept in, and the suspension components were worn. I had extensive work done to the car in the first year, which ended with removing the rust from the bodywork and then finally getting the car completely resprayed in the original color (the clear coat was peeling from certain areas on the original paintwork).
Condition now
Engine: The Mercedes M104 engine is strong and this car has just turned over from 79000 miles (it's still driven so the mileage will rise). The car starts first time every time. When the suspension components were replaced the wheels were aligned (using the correct process for the w124) and the car runs perfectly straight and is rock solid on the road with no vibration or drifting up to and over 100 mph. The engine is economical giving an average urban/highway mileage of 21.2 MPG over the last 3000 miles that I've kept track. Kick down works perfectly; there is no knock going into gear or delay into reverse (w124s can suffer this). There is no 'check engine light' (there was when I bought it; the fault codes suggested that the EGR line was blocked; it was. The line was unblocked and the fault code is now clear).
Exterior: The paintwork is new; there are two tiny scratches; one on the hood (a chip); the other is a scratch on the passenger wing mirror. Both are maybe 1/8th of on inch. I can send photos. The paint job is good but not excellent. There is some orange peeling on the roof section where the sprayer obviously got too close. It's maybe 3-4 inches long but it's purely cosmetic. There are a number of small 'dings' in the paintwork. I didn't want the car covered in filler when they did the respray. They are impossible to show in the photos and are tiny.
Wheels/tires: The car has 5 alloys (including the spare) as shown. The alloys are in very good condition; some pitting from brake dust but otherwise very good. The spare is sub-average condition and is scratched. The tires are the correct Michelin Pilots. They have probably about 10k left.
Additional Tires/wheels: The sale includes a set of4 brand new (never fitted) Vredestein 195/65 R15 tires. I have a set of 15" 15 hole MB chromed wheels that are also available by negotiation, or will include if the price clears the reserve by a margin.
Interior: The interior is 24 years old (less the drivers seat cover, which is brand new and was made in CA by German Auto Tops and was fitted in NY). The original (mushroom) leather shows some surface cracking on the drivers side (from getting in/out) but it's cosmetic. The rear seats have barely been used and are almost perfect. The passenger seat is in excellent condition. The leather inserts on the doors and in the rear are almost perfect. The center armrest has some wear but functions perfectly. The rear armrest is perfect. The wood is in very good condition throughout, but there is a surface crack around the electric window buttons (I've had it out; it's only in the veneer). The wood under the front and rear armrests is in excellent condition and both storage areas operate as they should. The car still has the original (unused) tool roll and jack. The car still has the original MB USA first aid kit stowed in the first aid kit locker behind the rear headrests. It has never been opened. (Would suggest it never is, which means if you plan on having an accident, get a spare).
Electronics: The car was very advanced for its time and has a considerable amount of electrically operated components. The electric seats work perfectly with the exception of the headrest raise/lower function. This was my next job to tackle (not complex; just time consuming). The motors are fine; the w124 has a fragile plastic component that engages a gear, which raises/lowers the headrest. The components are cheap. Just needs time. The electronic steering wheel operates perfectly. All windows operate perfectly as does the 'convenience' function (when locking the car, hold the key in the 'lock' position and all the windows are raised). Central locking works as it should. The rear headrest 'lower' function (operates on a vacuum system) works perfectly having worked through it as part of the restoration. Cruise control works perfectly. AC blows cold. The front headlamp washers/wipers work, but I was in the process of removing the blades for a cleaner look. I will include new wiper delete plates that have been sprayed in the body color of the car and are ready to be fitted once the wipers are removed. I have removed the Hirshmann electronicallyoperated antennae (it was stuck half way). The motor has been replaced but it needs a new mast (around $25) but this would then need to be fitted. If you wanted a radio antenna I'd suggest buying a modern replacement for about $120. The antenna is blanked currently - done to look simply like the antenna is lowered. I removed the original MB radio/cassette because I wanted Bluetooth. I have fitted a Pioneer head unit with Bluetooth and hands free. The mic is fitted discreetly. The new system is excellent and the sound from the 5 speakers is very good. I will include the original MB head unit with the sale. Sounds is great from my iphone. Electric mirrors work perfectly. The seatbelt feeder arms work perfectly.
Work completed during restoration:(Note - this is the big stuff; a ton of smaller things were also done. I have receipts for everything in a folder that will be included with the sale).
