1957 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class SL1957 Mercedes 190 SLRoadster with Optional Hardtop
Before and after WWII the Germans were always known for their great mechanical skills, ability and precision. Certainly, Mercedes Benz had a reputation for all these qualities being built into these cars. All that being said, historically the German designed cars over the decades were sometimes really great but often they did not compare with other country's designs, especially Italy, France and the United States. The reason we are mentioning all of this is that in 1955 Mercedes came out with the 300SL and the 190SL and design wise Mercedes hit it out of the ball park and everybody fell in love with the 300SL and the 190SL. The love affair for these cars has never ended in the last 60 plus years.
The 190SL in this auction is in one of the most beautiful colors we have ever seen on a SL. Very seldom do you find an SL for sale with both tops. This car as you can see from the pictures has both tops. The owner tells us that the car mechanically is in excellent running condition. He further states that the car starts, stops and handles just great. He feels that the 94,150 is represented by careful maintenance and the wheels have been powder coated and the chrome is of high luster.
To get the proper perspective on the cost of a brand new 190SL the list price was $5,129.00. Compare this to a brand new Chevrolet convertible fully loaded with every option at around $2,300. You can see that Mercedes was double the cost of the Chevrolet at that time. The 190SL was designed in mind for the successful business person who appreciated the German quality and the fabulous design and who appreciated the wonderful handling characteristics.
There are those that say in reference to the design, there are hints of Ghia here and there and the flowing curves and heavy chrome that even suggest a touch of American influence. The overall design package is tight, clean and extremely elegant. Yes, of course the 190SL does have many of the appearances of being a shrunk down 300SL roadster. When you put the hardtop on it does change the personality of the car completely and makes it look like a great sports touring car as compared to when the top is down it looks like a true sports car.
When you review the automotive literature of the day like Road and Track, you find comments such as: the car is beautifully built, solid in every way, with fit and finish near perfect in every detail. To take a quote of Road and Track of the day, "Very few sports cars have been so eagerly awaited or so long in coming as the moderately priced SL version of the Mercedes Benz - - - the net result is a car which is slightly more expensive and a little heavier than originally planned but certainly it should be durable, dependable and without bugs". Road Track found that the car had a top speed of 102 mph five years after the original Road and Track test that wrote, "testers remained impressed with the car's character, build and integrity, commenting that the steep price of $5,129 seemed a little more plausible when one looks into the details and sees the quality of the car". The English publication "The Auto Car" tested the 190SL and wrote, "It proved to be fast and tireless, exhilarating to drive and was obviously created with long distance, comfortable travel in mind." Auto Car was able to find a top speed of 106 mph.
We realize that many collectors are not fully familiar with all the details of the 190SL as they are with the 300SL and we thought that the above would be informative.
In reference to this 1957 Mercedes 190SL in this auction. The car is equipped with the original rebuilt 4-cylinder engine, original 4-speed manual transmission and has been repainted in the original Mercedes "Hellgruen" color. The chrome was redone by Paul's chrome plating, one of the best in the country. The car has the original factory soft top and the original factory hardtop. According to the owner the car has no rusts or accidents and may have a few slight body dings that are barely visible to the naked eye. The underside is clean and tidy and the car also has the original wheels that have been powder coated. The tach and the speedometer are not working. The power brake booster has been replaced with the same as the original. The seats were upholstered in original style with Naugahyde material. The car does have a new fuel pump. A newer Hermosa radio with Bluetooth (that looks like the original). The car has been upgraded with two Weber Bologna Type 8E side mounted carburetors.
In closing, we would certainly like to bring to the attention of collectors both in the United States and abroad that the 190SL is recognized as a historically significant classic car all over the world. In our opinion knowing that the 300SL sell in the vicinity of $1.1 Million to $1.7 Million, the 190SL in general on an arbitrage basis are priced very low in the market place. This seller has a low reserve and this car should make somebody very happy not only for the pride of ownership of the car but also for the possibility of getting it at a very reasonable price. (Please don't ask the reserve).
We will be traveling during August and September to car shows so we are asking serious bidders to please call 847-774-4857. We feel that serious parties will make the effort to make a phone call.
