1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E Saloon – VIN WDBEA36E1NB795268

For your consideration is my remarkably clean 1992 124-chassis Mercedes-Benz 500E Sedan – the ONLY Mercedes-Porsche joint venture vehicle and arguably the first-ever Porsche-built sedan – which sold for over $80,000 new in 1992. According to Mercedes-Benz records, this car is one of only seven produced in this color for the US market.

Wearing just over 165,000 miles (just over 6,600/year average), this car has been our family weekend cruiser. As a freelance automotive journalist, I’m now on to my next project and am thinning the herd – this is not a desperation or fire sale. I have 2 factory master keys, one valet key, original books and manuals and full service history from day 1 documenting a “no expense spared” approach to care and maintenance totaling a whopping $53,524.33 (I do have an Excel spreadsheet summarizing the service history which I can share with interested buyers)! While not a show car, it is a definite #2+ car you can be proud to show but not afraid to rack up the miles on.

Among the key major service items on these cars are the wiring harness, which has been replaced on this car, and the transmission, which was rebuilt just 3,000 miles ago. The car does not show any sign of oil leaks but does seep a little power steering fluid if it sits for a long time. The oil was changed about 500 miles ago, at which time the battery was also replaced.

On the inside, this car is in very nice original condition. The cream beige feintuft velour carpet is in excellent condition, and the car comes with 2 sets of factory floormats: carpeted and rubber. The power leather seats and dash are crack and rip free showing only the slightest patina of age. The wood is very nice, but has a couple of hairline cracks on the panel between the rear seats. The headliner is gorgeous. There are no foul odors – there doesn’t appear to have ever been any smoking or leaks inside. The air conditioning, power windows, sunroof, and power locks all work properly, and the car is current on the stringent Virginia emissions and safety inspections. The factory radio turns on and off properly, and the power antenna goes up and down as it should.

Outside, the car is remarkably straight. The car was repainted due to some road rash in 2015 with a trim-off, top-quality Sikkens paint matching the factory finish beautifully. Being a garaged Southern California car its whole life until last year, there is no sign of rust anywhere on the car, and no sign or report of prior damage. The doors, hood, and trunk all shut with the appropriate thunk. All of the lenses are in very good, clear condition. The alloy wheels are very nice painted AMG monoblocks with brand-new Michelin all-season performance tires. There is a spare tire in the trunk along with a complete tool kit and jack. Glass is all original and crack-free.

The motor starts easily and settles to a very smooth idle. The power steering functions properly, and the 4-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly. There are no odd noises or whines from the driveline. The brakes are in good condition and do not pull. The car pulls like a freight train and achieves super-legal speeds in the blink of an eye.
