DESCRIPTION:
THE FOLLOWING DESCRIPTION IS INTENDED TO BE AS OVERLY CANDID AS POSSIBLE SUPPORTED BY OVER 90+ DETAILED PHOTOS (including underside pics on a lift) and a recent mechanical inspection listing a few mechanical items which could be done. This is probably more negative than it needs to be but this is a driver not a show car asking $40k and I prefer to highlight any possible areas of focus.
CARFAX reports no accidents or salvage. Note: Report notes that the vehicle was reported stolen when NEW back in 1989 (possibly mis-shipped in transit or from dealer). Registered by first owner in 1992 in OHIO and then in MICHIGAN in 2003 and then MICHIGAN in 2016.
CARFAX report run (01/17) shows that it qualifies for CarFax BuyBack Guarantee for no title problems reported by DMV. AUTOCHECK Report is CLEAN. TITLE is clear Michigan Title.
OVERVIEW:
This is a nice driver 560SL which can benefit greatly from some fairly simple TLC attention to some cosmetics to be a wonderful car. It has a very rich looking color combination with the Desert Taupe metallic paint and Brazillian Leather interior and matching brown canvas convertible top.
TWO TOPS: The car comes with both hard and soft top. The Brown German Canvas soft top is in very good condition although the plastic window has yellowed. The Hardtop has been worn much of its life and shows well. Rear Hardtop Defroster.
INTERIOR: The carpets, console and dash are pretty nice. The usual small cracks in dash. The interior is very rich looking. Driver seat has two seam splits (side bolster and shoulder seam) but seating surfaces are without cracks or tears. New seatback leather would be a few hundred dollars to purchase.
EXTERIOR: The car was repainted by a prior owner. Definitely not a high $ job (not bare metal) but shows OK for a driver. Paint has some orange peel and could benefit from a touch up/cut and buff for regain full luster and shine. There are a few blemishes which need to be touched up and then color sanded for best result (a few scratches on the body, scratches on convertible top boot from top removal and install and paint in a couple very small spots shown in the photos requiring touch up to fix small peeling/adhesion). Usual small spots ahead/behind bumpers where the fenders connect to lower valence. SEE PHOTOS. Overall, the car presents well in driver condition.DASH: A few small, thin cracks on the dash in the usual places (see photos, I think there are four). NO MECHANICAL WARNING LIGHTS ON DASH. They function as they should but all go out after their "checks" with the exception of one Yellow bulb light. Not sure which bulb is requiring replacement. Allgauges seem to work, including clock.Tachometer works intermittently (Have not tried to troubleshoot. Full disclosure).
UNDERSIDE: Front lower valence has a crack/chip out of the lower plastic (photo). The car has some minor corrosion on several of the hardlines (fuel pump area). I tried to show in photos and did not try to clean or treat. This looks to be easy to clean up or replace a couple hoses/lines connected to the fuel filter/tank.The rockers appear to have been worked on in the past as there is evidence of repair at the leading edge with some bondo. (see photos of rockers and jackpoints). There are small spots of bubbling ahead/behind of the bumpers where it attached to the body which seems to be normal on these cars. Slight rust on the underside pinch welds along inner rockers but not major in my opinion. Floors and remainder of underside look solid. It could all benefit from a cleaning, rust preventative product and some black rock guard on the lower rockers to show well. I left the photos as-is condition versus treating covering up with cosmetic re-spray.
EXHAUST: New hangers have been installed but the rearmost muffler does need replacing.
TIRES: Tires are in good condition, expecially the two rears, but are mismatched manufacturers.
RECENT 01/17 SERVICE INCLUDES:Fresh Oil/Filter change and replacement ofnew relays (fuel pump relay was not providing consistent power to the dual fuel pumps).
Prior owner stated that they did new shift bushings, new trans coolant lines, new brake pads but I have no documentation of this.
The car currently runs and drives. January 2017 mechanical inspection yielded this list of optional items (not required for running/driving). Nothing too huge.
>could use brake and power steering fluid flush> transmission cooler hardline in front seeping> transmission pan seeping> motor mounts soft> driveshaft carrier torn> inner and outer tie rod ends, centerlink and steering damper loose>small seepage in valve cover gaskets>AC compressor bearing noisy>Starter/flexplate - intermittent noise when starting>front brake pads may be wrong size. wheels do not spin freely when up on lift.>muffler needs replacing.
