1980 Lotus EspritOffered for sale, from KURT TANNER MOTORCARS, is this attractiveLotusEsprit carbureted Turbo model. This car was recently purchased from a Pennsylvania exotic car collection. It's Giugirio penned Italian coachwork is strikingly finished in Canary Yellow with it's original black leather trim, that could use some improvement.
The body on this car looks extremely good with a decent quality respray at some point in it's recent life. The panel fit looks correct and all the panels open and close correctly. The bumpers look great and there is no sign of damage anywhere on the car, with excellent gapping. The hydraulic struts that hold up the rear engine lid need to be replaced. The car still retains all of it's original Triplex glass, and the black accent trim items are really a standout on this car in this color scheme. This car starts very easily on the button, revs well with no smoke or noises, and exhibits perfectly healthy engine behavior. Oil pressure at speed at 2000 rpm is 50 psi, with a hot idle around 20-25 psi. On our test run the temperature gauge sat in the lower to the middle mark, which is a good sign. The car runs, drives, and shifts very well. The Turbo kicks in fine and then acceleration becomes blistering! The timing belt appears to be healthy with no cracking. The brakes are a bit weak, the pedal is bit spongy, most likely from time in storage or a weakening brake booster. Maybe a brake bleed would cure this... There is a little front end shimmy at speed. The Pirelli tire set, currently fitted on the car's correct alloys, may have some minor flat spots from storage that may drive out. Mechanicals overall appear very healthy.
The car's interior trim is completely original and could use some improvement. There are some color coded seat covers fitted over the original leather, which has shrunk and dried up a bit with a few cracks showing (picture). The car's trim is definitely usable but doesn't really match the exterior of the car now for it's current condition. This car was originally trimmed in glove soft leather but after 35 years is now showing some age.
The car's underside looks clean. There are some minor tears in the front fiberglass underpanel which I'm sure is typical because of the car's proximity to the ground. All of the electrical switches and instruments work well with the exception of the exterior side mirrors, the cooling fan light flickers on and off, the radio, and speedometer/odometer. The car includes the original jack and handle set.
Overall, this attractiveLotusis nicely finished in a rarely seen color scheme that suits the car very well. This supercar is currently excellent value for the performance it offers. With some easy improvements, one would have a very sharp motorcar that is a thrill to drive.
