LAND ROVER SERIES 2A, 1971

PETROL 2.25 engine showing 25400 Miles. I think it will have flipped over once but for the motor I think this number is correct. I have old test certs from the UK which show very low year to year milage until I bought her. She has been my daily drive in England for a year and has performed perfectly.

A very original and genuine example of a series 2A 109. This model is, in my opinion, the connoisseurs choice of the classic series range of the Land Rover. This is a late series 2A version with a 2.25 petrol engine. It has many features that make it a very useable vehicle without being a pain to maintain.

This vehicle was first owned by the Southern Electric utility company in the UK and came as a Cherry picker from Land Rover. She therefor did very few miles but the original diesel mother had a lot of hours at stand still. From there she was bought buy an old guy. He poured his heart and soul into it for 20 years or so. It had been laid up for a few years. Recently it has undergone work to recommission it for use and then finished this work in order to ready her for shipment and import to the US for a Road Trip. She has just faultlessly completed 2250 miles from Oxnard to CDA with me and my family camping all the way. She will sit at 50 mph but feels better at 45 all day long so quiet highways and back roads are best. Around town she's a blast with tons of people commenting on her. If I was keeping her and looking at another long trip probably the only thing I would look into is fitting an overdrive unit. For town use she fine as she is.

In summary this Land Rover is a good original vehicle. It has a very good bulkhead and a good original chassis with the original chassis number stamped into the chassis leg. The chassis is sound and has now been completely treated and sealed to prevent rust. I did this myself over a couple of long weekends. There are a number of repairs and replacement crossmember and outriggers some plating but not very much. Although the chassis has had some work it is of a good standard and it has done well to survive for 45 years.

Here is a list of things that have been sorted out.

BRAKES

NEW, servo, master cylinder, front and rear flexi hoses, wheel cylinders front and rear, brake shoes front and rear.

Also note existing copper brake lines throughout.

CLUTCH

NEW master cylinder, slave cylinder, flexi hose and tubing.

AXLES

rear hub seals and seal tracks. Rear half shafts removed and inspected.

Oils drained front and rear and refilled with EP90.

Swivel housings appear to be full of one shot grease.

Both axles carefully inspected for operation no nasty noises and drained oil inspected.

Free wheel hubs checked.

Propshafts checked and greased.

GEARBOX AND TRANSFER

Oils drained and refilled with EP90

Drained oil checked. Operation all ok.

Note that it is original 2A gearbox with crash mesh on first and second gear.

ENGINE. The original diesel motor was swapped for a recon petrol unit of the same era.

This engine has had a fair amount of work done to it in the past.

I have been informed that the cylinder head has had extensive work carried out. It has hardened valve seats and gas flowed ports. I have also been informed that it has a special camshaft fitted. All of this has been based around a military recon unit.

Engine starts and runs well. I have fitted the correct fuel lift pump with sediment bowl and a supplementary in line filter. It has fitted an overhaul kit to the Zenith carb.

Timing is set to 3 deg BTDC.

Oil drained and new oil and filter fitted at 23500 miles

BODYWORK

New driver and passenger door top and bottom.

New safari rear door.

The vehicle has been recently painted in Pastel green and limestone.

Very good bulkhead and front panel.

The Land Rover is up for sale as you see in the pictures.

Continued work:

Fitted a new trailer socket and tested it.

Fitted new stainless steel light bezels as the old ones were rusty.

Rust treated the chassis

Shultz Tarta sealed chassi

10 Lts of Waxoyl inside and outside of chassis. Applied with wheels remover from a pit to give best coverage.

Door locks replaced all round. One key opens all doors.

New Fuel tank as old one leaked and had sediment which filter was catching.

Geared starter fitted. Original, while starting every time, was labouring so fitted to go easy on the battery.

5 New Wolf wheels with Avon tyres fitted at 23000 miles. These totally transformed the ride and are one of the only non original items.
