1974 Land Rover Series Pickup

Up for auction is my hard to find right hand drive Series III 88" pickup. I prefer the pickup top as it's easier to remove than the standard wagon, the pickup roof takes up less space in the garage, and my furry dog can ride in the back. This is an unrestored Land Rover in average condition. There generally seems to be two types of Series for sale out there, total wrecks that have been stripped for parts and have been sitting in a field for the past twenty-five years, or complete restorations that will set you back twenty-five grand! This one is the rarely for sale well used Land Rover. Never having seen a restoration that I know of, it obviously could use a few things here and there, but as it sits it's a perfectly capable vehicle.

I've owned it for a short while, and I have spent some time fixing the few major problems I found it had. I went through the brake system. They weren't releasing properly, and after replacing the master cylinder twice, it turned out to be improper brake pedal adjustment that was causing the issue. I also went through the electrical, and fixed any wiring issues I found.Finally, I also removed the worn out, mismatched tires and cheap aftermarket wheels that were on the Rover when I purchased it. I purchased the correct wheels from Rovers North, had them powder coated to the proper color, and bought new tires.

I also replaced the headlights, and replaced all the indicators with self contained LED setups, also from Rovers North. I installed individual brush guards on all the lights. I replaced the 6v bulbs with 12v ones in the Unity H1 fog lamps, as well as replaced a damaged bezel on one that I was lucky enough to find on eBay. I'm not sure how fog lamps from the 40s ended up on a Rover from the 70s, but I like the way they look so I've left them on. I replaced the door seals. I removed the beat up fender flares. I also added the towbar.

Apart from that, everything else is in decent shape for an old Rover. The odometer reads 14105, but unlike most of these auctions I'm not going to claim that's all that it has on it. It's safe to assume it's 114105 miles. The engine starts up easily, and has good oil pressure. (See the picture of the oil gauge, that's pressure @ idle) The four wheel drive works great, the locking hubs engage and disengage easily. There are the standard Series eccentricities, like a complicated to navigate gearbox, but nothing out of the ordinary that I've found. The previous owner installed some upgrades to the engine, including a new carb and upgraded ignition system, as well as painting it, but I don't believe it's ever been rebuilt. Basically, it's mechanically what you'd expect from an old Land Rover Series. There's at least four different colors of paint on it that I've found in various places. I've found tan, red, and forest green paint under the olive drab, although I don't know which one is the original. There is also an amateurish spray in bedliner that a previous owner installed at some point. The seats seem to be new. The underbody and outriggers are in decent shape with little more than surface rust that I've noticed. The bulkhead has seen repairs at some point, but is pretty solid.
