When it debuted in 1957, the Flaminia Berlina represented a new age for Lancia under the direction of Mr. Pesenti. With a Pininfarina styled body and the underpinnings evolved from the B12 (and original Aurelia ideology of a front engine V6 and rear transaxle) the Flaminia became Italy's largest and most comfortable sedan.

The (previously abundant) sliding-pillar front suspension had been completely disregarded and a modern coil spring and wishbone system was implemented. The rear-mounted, 4-speed trans-axle remained standard (as it would be on the various Flaminia derivatives) but the shifter found itself on the steering column and a 1st gear synchro had been added inside the box. The first cars off the line were equipped with upgraded drum brakes and discs provided as an option. Soon, however, the discs would become standard for all four corners - the rears mounted inboard on the axle.

The 2.5L V-6 from the Aurelia and B12 had reached it's maximum cylinder capacity, so a brand new block was cast which could, and would be, developed further; the Berlina was already heavy, and it would only gain weight throughout production. Engine output had been increased to 110bhp and an additional oil cooler installed to ease stress on the small powerplant.

The interior was well appointed and noted among critics as being very quiet, even at speed. Bench seats were standard, though there existed anoption for twin seats inthe front. The simple yet elegant dash was well appointed and included a radio. Two primary instruments were easily viewed by the driver through a two-spoke steering wheel. Ashtrays and hand grabs were provided for the rear occupants in the back of the front seats, along with a fold down armrest in the center of the rear bench.

This 1962 model has recently emerged from a long-term ownership by a Lancia collector and was purchased previously from another Lancia collection in California. A conversation with the son of the (believed to be) secondowner indicated that his father had several of these cars and he recalled that, at that point, the car was a dark grey. This is a Euro spec car and appears to have been originally registered in Milan, Italy.

Being a long-time resident of southern California, this car is exceptionally dry and solid with a very clean, nearly rust-free body. Panel fit is good and the doors close with ease and authority. Hard points in the chassis for the suspension, sub-frame mounts, trans-axle mounts and jack points are all very clean and strong.

After sitting for many years, the car was carefully checked and is now running well from the key with compression at 115/120 and the engine sharing a matching type number with the chassis. The interior is remarkably well intact and could be used as-is with some careful cleaning. With more service, the car can be returned to a streetable condition, or this is otherwise an excellent candidate for restoration. Only 638 of these cars were produced to this specification and the Lancia marque is becoming more and more collectible.
