1964 Jaguar E-Type Series I OTS Roadster 3.8L
This is an interesting E-Type being listed on behalf of owner. The E-Type was originally purchased in the 1980's as a gift for the owner's mother. She apparently did not drive it much, eventually the E-Type succumb to being neglected and was stored. In 2001 the owner brought the car back to Virginia and ultimately decided to restore the E-Type so that he could enjoy it personally.

It was originally Carmen Red over black, from what we can tell. When restored is was finished in a proper period color of Opalescent Dark Green over tan, with a tan hood and hood cover. It started out as a numbers matching car, but rather than dealing with rust and body damage repair, the body shell (monocoque) was replaced with a new Martin Robey unit.Martin Roby Engineering is the world-renowned manufacturer of replaced parts for classic Jaguars. The frame that cradles the engine was also replaced with a new Martin Robey unit. The bonnet (nose of the car as we know it), doors, and trunk lid were all original. As the engine and transmission were found to be mechanically sound, they were not rebuilt. It starts with easy, does not smoke, and runs pretty smoothly.

The restoration was completed in 2009, just before the restoration shop closed, and the E-Type has been in storage since, being driven only short distances, essentially for exercise. In the last 9 months, it was even displayed at a local Jaguar club concours and another vintage car display for the local historical society.

Whenever a restoration is completed, regardless of the level, there is always some sorting to be done.Such was never really performed on this car, since it was really never driven much. Here is what I can say though in addition to the body shell.New parts include the brakes and suspension components, fuel tank & pump, cooling system, the complete interior (leather seats, trim panels, carpet, dash top). Air conditioning (Vintage Air) was also installed and blows cold. All five wire wheels were replaced with new, though they are SII wheels not SI. Tires, although with new looking tread (having less than 100 miles), they are now approx. 10 years old.The exhaust system is new stainless (Bell form the UK). The porcelain coating on the exhaust manifolds is worn, as always on a E-Type that is driven. Knock-offs and steering wheel have been replaced as well. Most of the brightwork was replaced or re-chromed.

The car presents well as a driver and catches attention wherever it goes.Unfortunately, even though enough was spent to have accomplished a concours restoration, that was not the result. The paint does have some flaws when looking close up, though it does shine and is not worn looking in anyway. It is strange that door dings were not repaired prior to painting. One thing for sure is the car is remarkably solid without any real concern over rust, having a new body shell.Essentially the major components of the body, suspension and brakes are all new. There are things that I find strange, such as when the rear unit was out of the car to replaced brakes and suspension components, why not paint or refurbish old components that were reinstalled? There is much detail work to be done under the hood that starts with the need to polish the aluminum cam covers and carburetor dash pots that reflect the quintessential iconic E-Type.
