"Dip deep into their throttles at any rpm and the frisky Fords respond with a wallop of good old-fashioned American torque-enough to make you forget all about four-valve combustion chambers and high-tech turbochargers." -Car and Driver magazine, "1988 Ten Best Cars"
As to their current popularity as collector cars, put the appeal of these Fox-bodied Mustangs this way: "... the affordability of the Mustang, combined with its fun factor, makes almost any V-8 or turbocharged car an appealing example of American muscle that's just modern enough to be your daily driver, without asking you to make sacrifices in comfort or reliability. Whether it's a canvas for a period-correct drag car, or simply a fair weather cruiser, there are a million or two Mustangs out there waiting to introduce you to the world of the Fox."
In the case of this highly original red-over-white convertible example from Texas, it's not just a 1988 Mustang, but a GT 5.0, meaning it is gifted with the largest engine available for the model that year, the 301ci (5.0-liter) V8 backed by a driver's choice 5-speed manual. The engine was rated at 222 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. With only 84,000 miles, or under 3,000 miles per-year on average, this Mustang is a very low-mileage car. Its exceptional condition bears that out.
The car's exterior is near perfect, from single-frame headlights to louvered taillights. The red paint retains a factory-like gloss over straight body panels with factory tolerances. Of special note, the GT's bespoke lower-body treatments with front air intake incorporating driving lights, four side brake-cooling intakes, and rear sculpted valance all exhibit no scars, wear marks, or signs of any damage whatsoever. Impact-absorbing bumpers front and rear are free of damage appearing never to have actually absorbed any impacts. The red-on-red horizontal body-accent stripe is an added feature of note. A matte-black luggage rack is mounted atop the trunk. The power-operated white convertible top is free of wear marks or signs of abrasion, and is properly fitted. It stores beneath a white cover. All emblems-notably including the "5.0" engine identification-are present. Glass and lighting lenses are all clear and free of cracks or clouding. Factory turbine-design alloy wheels are free of curb damage and are mounted with Cooper Cobra white-letter performance tires.
Inside, the white upholstery with red trim makes for a striking look. Overall, interior surfaces show little sign of wear, and only very light patina. The pleated-leather upholstery has a classic design. Red-and-white door trim, the dashboard, steering wheel, and the 5-speed Hurst shifter (including its leather boot) all retain their original appearance. The instruments and all controls (including power window and mirror controls) and related surfaces are uniformly free of obvious wear. A Pioneer audio head unit is mounted in the "center stack" beneath the heating and air-conditioning controls. Red carpeting throughout exhibits little, if any, obvious wear. (The car's factory radio and carpet mats are included in the sale.)
Under the hood, the GT's high-output 5-liter V8 is complete with all components, wiring, hoses and the like properly mounted. The engine compartment is clean without being excessively detailed. The car's undercarriage is also complete with only very minimal surface rust on un-coated surfaces, and no sign of body-panel rust. Notably, the full-length dual exhaust is free of damage or any dents from too-aggressive driving or track use.
The excellent condition of this well-kept '88 Mustang GT is faithfully presented in the more than 135 high-definition photographs, together with a short walk-around-and-startup video mentioned earlier, available at the GarageKeptMotors site. A link to its Carfax documents the car's accident-free history. All that said, there is no substitute for an in-person, up-close inspection. We encourage such inspections by interested parties at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. We ask only that an appointment be made by phone or email in advance. Our showroom is not open to the public.
One owner reviewing his '88 Mustang online couldn't contain his enthusiasm: "The best cars Ford ever created! Thanks for this beast that packs a rumble you can hear for miles coming, and you know what it is before it gets there." Ford's ad agency couldn't have put it any better.
