1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL

In the early and mid-1960s, if you wanted big block muscle, the only place to get it was in a full-sized car. The ideal mixture of luxury and performance, this 1964 Galaxie 500XL packs a lot of extra power with a built and stroked 390 big-block V8, choice options like power steering and power brakes, as well as a cool survivor Wimbledon White exterior and comfortable interior. The resulted one of the cooler pre-muscle car drivers that we've had the pleasure of taking around the block.

A favorite of Ford fans since it was first introduced, it's no surprise why this Galaxie 500XL is still wearing its original coat of Wimbledon White, and still today it's the ideal example of Ford's gentleman's express. The sloping rear roof was a recent addition to the Fairlane and Galaxie lineup, and helped as much on the NASCAR big ovals as it did in showrooms. The paint isn't without its issues (it's very old after all), and other than the minor bumps and bruises and the repainted rockers, it has a killer patina that presents very nicely, with a nice, soft shine that is entirely appropriate to the era. You'll also appreciate the preserved Galaxie 500 trim, with bumpers that have obviously never really hit anything in all these decades and an overall good shine on the rest of the stainless. Ford's jet-inspired taillights were still evolving in 1964, now enclosed in a very neat and tidy rear end, and those on this white hardtop are in good condition.

The interior appears to be a combination of wonderful preservation and neatly restored components, and we really love the Code 89 Palomino shade of tan inside. The seats are in very good condition and thanks to correct materials, they'll probably look awesome for years to come, flanking a center console that's purely style for style's sake. The wide gauge cluster spans half the dash in front of the driver, and includes a massive speedometer flanked by two round gauge pods, all with off-white faces that look awesome against the tan interior. Those factory gauges are supplemented with a trio of aftermarket units under the dash, but they had the presence of mind to not hack up the dash and left the original AM radio and heater in place. The steering wheel shows the most age, but honestly that's the coolest place to have it, as the patina feels unique in your hands can be shown off with pride as further proof that this car has seen some amazing history in its time. Out back, you'll find a cavernous trunk that's all original as you might suspect, featuring a correct Houndstooth mat along with a bias-ply spare tire and jacks set that are almost undoubtedly this Galaxie's original units.

This car still packs a correct Z-code 390 FE cubic inch V8, although this one has been fully rebuilt, bored and stroked to 423 actual cubes, and further augmented thanks to '66 390 GT heads, a Holley Quick-fuel 4-barrel carburetor, and a full MSD ignition. Mated to a C6 three speed automatic transmission, the power and torque is delivered fast, but don't worry, this big girl can cruise too. The tidy engine bay shows signs of maintenance throughout, with bright chrome valve covers and a matching air cleaner adding a little flash inside. The bright MSD wires and ignition up front do the same, and the big radiator up front is aided further by an auxiliary fan that helps keep the big block nice and cool. Power brakes and power steering are also part of the equation, and a quick peek underneath will quickly show just how solid this Galaxie really is. The dual exhaust system gives the Galaxie a kicked-up rumble without being excessive, a fact you'll appreciate with a rear end full of highway-friendly 3.00 gears. The original steel wheels and wheel covers with spinners are included with the sale, but currently this Galaxie sits on a sporty set of 17-inch 5-spokes wrapped with 225/45/17 performance radials that really give the car a killer look.

This lovely hardtop is the most desirable of the Galaxies except for perhaps the convertible, and you can't argue with its performance credentials. With good power options, it's a car that you can still drive every day, or save it for warm summer days when you want to feel like you're at the wheel of something special. Call today!
