1957 Ford Thunderbird

AWESOME 1957 t - Bird

I was at this mechanic's shop because he owned a 1980 Porsche Targa he wanted my company to paint. In his shop I saw a half dozen Porches, a 1973 BMW 2002tii and several Mercedes 280SLs. But at the same time I saw this car under a cover in a corner and immediately recognized the fins as from a 1957 Thunderbird. I asked if I could see it, we took off the cover and I was shocked at its incredible original condition. I wanted it so of course was happy to learn he would sell it to me. The last photo was from when it was uncovered and I first saw it, and that's a 280SL straaight ahead of it.
He said the owner died while it was here at his shop where it was serviced. So he winterized the car, put it in the corner, it was sitting there for 20 years and he had since become the owner. He told me he had the original plates, the original poster from when it was first sold, the original service manual and much more. As far as he knew, the hard top had never been off the car! And while a couple of dings were fixed before 20 years ago, he said it had never been re-painted.
Obviously with a car off the road for so long, we had our work cut out for us to get it back up and running. After I got it back to the shop we cleaned the whole brake system and installed new wheel cylinders and new hard rear brake lines. The gas lines were cleaned and the gas tank went out to our radiator shop to be boiled out and serviced. We installed a new radiator, all new hoses and belts, rebuilt the carb, installed new spark plug wires, plugs, points and battery, serviced the motor with fresh oil and new filter and serviced the tranny.
We replaced the door window scrapers and wipers, installed a new set of carpets because after so many years the rubber under the gas pedal and brake had become hard and cracked. As for the body, we color sanded and buffed the whole car, and you can see how beautiful it came out. The photos show how we treated the underside - every inch of it was carefully cleaned, detailed and painted. We also carefully cleaned and detailed the motor and the items in the motor compartment. There was a hole in the passenger side muffler so we replaced it with a new one from Larry's Thunderbird. And of course the tires were hard as rocks after sitting this long so it needed a new set of tires.
So if you've been looking for an unmolested 57 porthole bird, you won't find another one like this anywhere. It is a great original low mileage car that has been brought back to life with total attention to detail both mechanical and aesthetic! You might want some custom touches, like an iPod compatible period-looking stereo with some new speakers like the ones from Retro Sound? Or some other items? Please let me know! And BTW, the mechanic is so happy with the paint job on the Targa, we have a Porsche 911, another Targa and a BMW 2002tii to do for him next!
Thanks for looking!AWESOME 1957 t - Bird
