Description:

1985 Ford Mustang SVO

After fourteen years of ownership, I'm selling this SVO Comp Prep. 1 of 40 Comp Preps produced in 1985, this one is 1b, dark grey metallic with leather. A Marti report confirms the car's authenticity and scarcity. The "Competition Preparation" package deleted virtually all comfort and convenience items to save weight and this particular car is 1-of-2 Comp Preps with leather built in 1985. It came from the factory with manual windows, manual locks, no A/C, no radio, no sunroof and leather seats. Other than leather this car is as bear bones as an SVO could be ordered.

The car has only bolt ons, and I've held onto all the original parts. Other than full-length, Steeda subframe connectors, turbo back 3” exhaust, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, a manual boost controller, roller cam, 255lph high pressure fuel pump, 35lb injectors and LA3 computer, the car is basically stock.

Body

Starting in 2007 the car was totally disassembled, stripped and refinished in the correct Ford 1b, dark grey metallic color by a professional body shop, specializing in fox body cars. This process included patching two rust holes: one in the c-pillar and one spot on the hatch, just below the rear window. The rest of the body was totally rust free (California car). The passenger rear wheel arch had a baseball sized dent that was smoothed, filled and repaired. All the trim was stripped, cleaned and painted in the correct medium grey. The car received all new dew wipes, weather stripping and body plugs. I installed all NOS emblems and decals consistent with an early, 1985 SVO to match the manufacturing date indicated by the Marti report. The front and rear bumper covers were professionally stripped and refurbished prior to being painted. The original header panel is intact with only 2 broken flanges which were repaired with epoxy. New marker lights, tail-lights and hardware were used during reassembly.

Engine

The engine has only stealth modifications including a rebuilt head with vitron seals and a roller cam. The exhaust manifold is a later E6 that has been ported and coated with high temp black paint. The original turbo was rebuilt and reinstalled with fresh hoses. The original intercooler and brackets are in a box and will be included with the car. The factory boost solenoid was replaced with a manual boost controller but is included with the sale. All the original wiring is intact and in good condition. The engine has not seen more than 16psi of boost since being rebuilt. I installed a full turbo back 3" exhaust with catalytic converter to comply with California emissions. It runs and sounds great other than a miss upon start up if the car has been sitting for a while (common for these cars).

Drive-line

The transmission and 7.5 posi rear-end are both original to the car. Each was gone through in 2007 and the rear end got new bearings, Moser ring and pinion and Yukon axles in 2017. The factory Hurst shifter is still there and functions perfectly. The clutch was replaced in 2016.

Interior

The carpet, headliner, upholstery and dash pad are new along with a few miscellaneous trim pieces. The sun visors, door panels, seat belts, dash, gauges and steering wheel are original. A correct SVO steering wheel, recovered in charcoal grey leather with horn pad is included with the sale but not installed. The correct shift knob with Hurst logo was replaced with a period correct, NOS Ford Motorsport, leather-shift knob that is identical to the original but does not have the Hurst stamp on it. The leather emergency brake handle needs to be recovered but is original to the car.

Suspension/Brakes

The original forged steel, front lower control arms and their irreplaceable ball joints are intact and in good condition. New, Koni adjustable rear shocks were installed in 2017 along with springs from a Mach1, lowering the car 1 inch all around. The Koni adjustable front struts were replaced in 2012 with new units. The original sway bars, control arms and spindles are all there and in good condition. The correct SVO brakes and associated hardware are also intact and function properly.

Problem Areas

The paint on the c-pillar has begun to bubble where the patch panel was installed. There’s a dime sized bubble on the hatch just above the passenger taillight. There’s a scratch on the bumper from parking too close to a high curb. The original Marchal fog lamps do not work; they may only need bulbs but I haven’t checked because I always keep them covered to protect the lenses. The flocking on the dash is worn thin in a few places and should be redone. The dash has a stress crack in the middle, its very hard to see but its there. The original, cargo area carpet is dingy but in good enough condition without fading so I didn’t bother replacing it. I do not have the rear cargo cover but they come up for sale on eBay from time-to-time.

Overall Condition

I drive this car daily. It starts reliably, runs strong and cruises comfortably at highway speeds. When I started restoring this car in 2004, I didn't set out to build a garage queen but it came out far better than I expected. It has 145k miles on it currently but could easily pass for having only 45k. You must see and drive this car to appreciate it. The pictures do not do it justice.

I have done my best to describe the car's condition. Please contact me for additional photos of the undercarriage, trunk, engine, etc. There is no reserve, the start price is a fraction of what I have invested, please only bid if you have the funds to complete the transaction.
