Stake Bed Pickup 1.5 Ton Dually
Absolutely Rust Free Over-Restored Garage Find
Indoors the last 25 years
Exercised occasionally, this vintage Ford hauler underwent a meticulous restoration 35 years ago and has clocked no more than 500 miles since its renewal. The truck has been resting in the shelter of a garage with infrequent calls to show grounds or parade duty and is mechanically fully operable and ready to get back to work. Being 87 years old is not going to stop this historic vehicle from flexing its muscles. Now it has rolled back out into the light and is ready to conquer new horizons.
This one-and-half ton dually has had only two past owners, the first being a local safe company that regularly transported its heavy goods on the truck's study oak bed from Portland to San Francisco. The Ford's next owner was a man named Bob and he had a vision. He purchased the stake bed pickup from the safe company decades ago and in the 80's set about restoring it. He and his team did an extraordinary job, overlooking nothing, and even after all these years the attention to quality and detail is seen everywhere. Bob passed after a long and productive life and the truck was put into storage, the title assumed by his daughter.
The Model AA six volt system is typically slow-turning but dependably kicks the 201 cubic-inch four into life. The 40 hp engine is durable and trustworthy and can be heard and seen doing its thing in a video filmed for this listing (Just send us your e-mail address and we'll provide a link) The engine was rebuilt and refinished by noted machinist Allan Schurman of Schurman Machine, Inc. Time has worked on the engine's appearance but with the scant miles put on the truck since the restoration, the engine itself has very little wear on it.
The three-speed (with compound low) transmission shifts properly and the brakes take hold as they should. A check of other systems proves the windshield wipers work, but not the ampere gauge. The exterior lights are operating. The troublesome ignition conduit has been bypassed with a toggle switch. As this truck is sold as a garage find, there are probably other minor areas that need sorting out.
Rust has never settled on this truck. It was purchased corrosion-free and so it has remained over most of a century. The Teal/Black paint combo is a factory color that we have not quite identified by name, but we know someone out there will. The finish is still deep and glossy but would profit from a light cut and buff. The chrome on the majestic grill and front bumper would likewise profit from a polish. How do you like that radiator cap ornament? It wears the Ford wreath and depicts a quail in flight and it's a wonder it has survived, original or repro we do not know.
Did we mention over-restored? The length of the dashboard sports painted woodgrain inlay and the rest of the interior is not utility Ford material but sumptuous mohair, woven carpeting and velvety headliner and interior panels. All of this still presents nicely but could use some cleaning and vacuuming. Replica tires mounted on the big five-hole factory steel wheels have deep tread and are hardly used, but have probably passed their working life. The hardware on the stake bed needs new brass plating, but the planks of the oak bed remain tight and solid for a beautiful refinish.
Since 1930, this big Ford pickup has accumulated only 48,487 miles. In a garage or out of it, its burly and classic lines lend it an iconic and commanding presence. Last of a breed and a truly historical American truck. Send us your e-mail address for an additional photo package and a link to the video.
