1978 Ford F-150 Ranger XLT

Incredibly over-built and filled with both performance and comfort-enhancing upgrades, this 1978 Ford F100 pickup is a no-compromises build with a 460 big block, a fresh transmission, and tons of options, all wrapped in a fantastic black short bed/regular cab body. Is this the ultimate '70s Ford pickup? The Ranger XLT is iconic these days, and if you were around in the '70s, you got used to seeing a lot of these on the road. Today, however, finding one that hasn't been worked back into the ground is challenging. Some survived by virtue of simply being cool, and this one, perhaps because it's black with a big block, managed to get stashed away instead of put out to pasture. The paint is more recent, of course, and looks great on the chiseled bodywork and it shows off just how straight the sheet metal really is. There are a few updates that give it a unique look starting with smoked headlight covers and LED taillights, a custom grille, that chrome roll bar in the bed, and tinted windows. For practicality, the bed has been treated to a spray-in bedliner, and there's plenty of brightwork on the body to break up all that inky black paint. Gray buckets from a late-model have been stuffed into the cab and it gives this truck a whole new lease on life. Instead of looking like '70s working class, it's 21st century first class and includes a host of trick modifications. The most notable is the custom-made center console, which not only houses the trick Hurst shifter for the brand new C6 3-speed automatic transmission, but also a pair of cup holders and an Alpine CD changer, all faced in genuine wood that warms up the interior. Then there's the instrument panel, which uses digital gauges hidden behind a tinted Plexiglas screen to give it a totally smooth look when the power's off and a magical light show when you turn the key. A leather-rimmed steering wheel adds some elegance to the already nicely appointed interior, and A/C, power windows, and an AM/FM/CD/Bluetooth head unit in the dash make it feel like a much younger truck. The engine is a beautifully detailed 460 cubic inch big block that looks great and runs even better. Holley Pro-Jection fuel injection was hidden under the stock air cleaner for a very subtle look, and it runs better than any carburetor you've ever driven. The block itself was painted Ford Blue and topped with chrome Motorsport valve covers that work well with the stock air cleaner assembly. The A/C system was upgraded to R134a refrigerant, and with power steering and brakes, it's easy to forget you're driving a vintage pickup. A big aluminum radiator with electric fan keeps temperatures under control and a great-sounding dual exhaust offers chrome tips peeking out from under the rear quarters. There are 3.00 gears in the 9-inch rear end, so this truck is effortless on the highway, especially with all that big block torque on tap. And the stance is exactly right, with the big wheel arches filled with equally large 20-inch chrome alloys wearing 275/45/20 performance radials. Not many trucks get this kind of makeover so late in life, but they really seem to have spared no expense to make this Ford truly spectacular.
