1988 Ford F-100

Up for sale is a 1988 (1981) Ford F-100 Flareside, chopped 4 inches. 460 engine with C-6 transmission. Custom built frame with Thunderbird front suspension (to get rid of the twin I-Beam).

The truck started out as a 1981 with a bad cab. I had a cab from a 1988 truck here, so I used that (and ’81-’86 cabs are really hard to find up here in the rust belt). I used the front end (fenders, hood, core support, cowl) from the 1981 along with the fender flares in the rear. It’s titled as a 1988 (because of the cab), but sports the looks of the ’81-’86 trucks. The truck may be titled as a '88, but I still call it a 1981 F-100, so if there's any confusion on the description, that's why. I have driven the truck approx. 164 miles since the build and it performed very well. Before this build, but with the same engine and trans, I put approx. 1000 trouble-free miles on it.

  • · Engine: D1 block 460
  • · Heads: D3VE Iron
  • · Intake: Weiand Stealth (WND-8012)
  • · Carburetor: Edelbrock 1412 – 800 cfm
  • · Valve Covers: 429 CJ – very hard to find, and expensive.

· One of a kind pulley system for all accessories. Uses only one serpentine belt and all components are off-the-shelf from the local parts store.

The engine is a 1977. Was a good runner when pulled, but went through it and honed cylinders, new piston rings, new bearings and gaskets. It has approx. 1200 miles on it and runs very good. Earls remote mounted oil filter. Timing is “straight up” for the cam (factory, the cam was retarded).

  • · Transmission: C-6 auto

Transmission was rebuilt and a Trans-Go shift programmer kit installed. Trans shifts very good, both up and down. Stock torque converter. Transmission also has approx. 1200 miles on it.

  • · Cooling System: Summit Racing (SUM-380451) aluminum 2 row (1 inch cores) radiator. Custom made stainless fan shroud. 16” electric fan (HFM-ZFB16S) 3000 cfm.

  • · Shifter: B&M Quicksilver (BMM-80683) ratcheting with a “T” handle installed and LED lit indicator.

  • · Rear Axle: 9" Ford axle,3.00 Gears, Ford Traction Lock, 31 spline axles.

  • · Exhaust: D5TE iron manifolds. 2.5” aluminized tubing to Flowmaster 50 series stainless Delta-flow mufflers (FLO-843051). The mufflers are 3” in and out. After the mufflers, the exhaust is 3” stainless. Sounds really good!!

  • · Frame and suspension: The front stub of the frame is out of a 1973 Thunderbird (this was before I found out about using Crown Vic parts). The main reasons for the swap was to get rid of the twin I-Beam suspension and it was set up for a 460 already. All jointed parts and bushings replaced ( tie rod ends, ball joints, control arm bushings, it’s all new). I also used Moog parts for everything I could. Steering gear box is also rebuilt.

The frame was custom built out of 2x4 steel tubing, .188” thick. All joints are fish-plated. Frame was sand-blasted, primed and painted black.

The rear suspension is leaf spring. Front and rear sway bars have been installed.

  • · Exterior Body: Top is chopped 4 inches. The hood has a Torino scoop grafted on to it (it could be functional if you wanted). Front side markers are shaved and installed in the ends of the front bumper. The rear side markers are in the box flares, just behind the rear tires. Antenna is shaved. Door handles and locks are shaved. AutoLoc entry kit installed. Blacked out windshield trim and side mirrors (original mirrors housings were used with new glass installed). Fog lamps installed in front bumper. I also used LED lighting wherever I could. Headlamps have the H-4 conversion and are on relays.

  • · Box: The box sides, tailgate, tonneau covers were custom built just for this project. All made out of 16 ga steel. The floor was raised to make room for the custom fuel cell. Battery box is located in the front of the box behind the passenger. All solid Oak boards, stained, and coated with Envirotex clear resin. The tonneau covers open via solenoids by switches inside the cab. The cover hinges and bear claw latches are easily found in case one is damaged. The center cover was originally designed to not open (and was made to fit tighter). Part way through the project, I decided to make it open. To open it, you have to have the front and rear covers open, or it rubs. I have six door poppers to install (haven’t had the time) to make the covers “pop up” a little to more easily open them. These will go with the truck.

  • · Fuel System: 20-21 gallon aluminum fuel cell with an Edelbrock 1791 electric fuel pump (mounted on rubber isolators). All aluminum and braided fuel lines. Custom fuel pressure gauge block under the hood. Because of having an electric fuel pump, there is an inertia kill switch installed for safety. Fuel cell also has the proper venting with a rollover valve installed.

  • · Wheels and Tires: Rear tires are Mickey Thompson N50-15 Sportsman I (just under 50% tread). Front tires are Firestone Affinity P205/70R15 (still like new). Wheels are Centerline Warriors. Fronts are 15 x 5.5. Rears are 15 x 10.

  • · Ignition: I used a Stock Ford distributor that got rebuilt with Motorcraft parts, which fires aMSD 6AL is mounted under the dash. 6000 rpm rev chip installed. Ignition wires are 9mm Ford Racing (FMS-M-12259-M460), and Motorcraft spark plugs.

  • · Battery and Cables: Battery is a Motorcraft 850CCA. Battery cables are made out of 2ga wire. There is a second fuse panel and bank of relays installed behind the passenger seat because the factory box didn't have enough locations for the added electrical.

  • · Charging system: New Taurus 3G alternator (130 amp with the soft start feature)

  • · Brakes: Stock Thunderbird front disc (11.72” rotors) and drum rear (11” x 2.25”). It stops good!!

  • · Interior: All custom made dash, which flows into the center console, then behind the seats. There is extra lockable storage behind the seats. All Autometer Phantom gauges. Mustang steering column. Separate fuel pump, fan and accessory lighting switches ( LED lighting in rear for refueling at night). Three switches for opening the tonneau covers. Two power points. Power windows and a switch to open the passenger door without reaching all the way over to the other side. This goes to the winning bidder: There is a hidden switch inside that I need to show you. I will not release this info to anyone but the winner of this auction.

  • · Sound System: Eclipse CD player with Alpine speakers, no amps.

  • · Paint: I used PPG paint on this truck with PPG DCU 2002 high solids clear. The flames are painted with a Candy Blue.

  • · A couple of things I need to point out:

-The font end has a shake in it. I believe it’s the tires (everything else is new and tight). I got stupid and drove it without having an alignment done. If you know somebody with a tire buffer, it should be a cheap fix. An alignment has been done, but I waited too long.

-The carburetor is a bit too big. I would recommend a 650 or 700. It runs good, but will be better with a smaller carb. Before this build, I had a 650 Quick Fuel Technologies carburetor on it and it ran extremely good.

-The rear main has a small drip, don’t know why.

-There is a small ding in the passenger door. I don’t know where it came from, but I was not happy when I saw it. It's not that noticeable, but am including the information.

-The emergency brake is not hooked up, but the pedal and front cable is installed. I wasn’t overly concerned because it’s an automatic trans.

-The radio antenna is not hooked up. I was undecided where to put one.

-This truck has no emissions installed or hooked up, so take that into consideration if you have emissions inspections.

I’m being open and honest with everything about this truck. I spent 6+ years building it. It was a fun build (well, sometimes frustrating) but now I need to move on. I just lost interest in it and don’t drive it anymore. If I’m not going to drive it, it’s getting sold to someone who will. I have worked on it too long and cannot get excited about it anymore. I hate that I feel that way, but it will be good to see it go to a new, caring owner.
