Not perfect. not a show car. but rather exactly the way it might have been in the late 1940s when it was still being used as daily transportation. Ford used two body companies. Briggs and Murray. to build their closed bodies and they are identifiable by the shape of the exterior window frames. The squared-off windows with straight upper frames identifies this '29 as a Briggs body. although the argument is completely academic. since values are identical. Dressed in Henry's favorite basic black. it has a no-nonsense look that suits it just fine. The paint is either an ancient repaint or even original. so it's not shiny and perfect. but if you like old cars that actually look like old cars. well. this one gets it exactly right. You won't mind little kids rubbing their hands on the fenders and if it gets rained on or bugs splattered on it. you won't mind a bit. And that. my friends. is extremely liberating. This is a Deluxe model. which includes cowl lights and two brake lights. although looking at the back. it appears that the sidemounts were added at some point later in life. The '28-29 models used nickel plating instead of chrome. so the bright trim has a wonderful patina to it that shines up to a soft glow rather than a hard shine. further endearing this car to the masses. The interior is likewise ancient and shows some signs of age and use. It's still serviceable. but there are a few rips and tears in the mohair fabric and a few storage issues. On the other hand. it's nice to see how luxurious the basic Ford sedan really was. with plenty of room for everyone on board. carpets instead of rubber mats like those found in open cars. and attractive wood garnish moldings that are an elegant touch. The familiar Model A controls are easy to master and the big steering wheel makes the car feel nimble on the road. It's easy to master the shifting of the 3-speed manual transmission that just needs a quick double-clutch to find the next gear and the driving position is comfortable enough for all-day tours. The simple instrument panel offers speed. fuel level. and an ammeter. and while it shows 11. 69 miles. there's just no way to know the actual mileage on a car this age. The 200 cubic inch inline-four remains one of the most entertaining little engines of the period. Plenty torquey and always eager. it moves the sedan without seeming to work too hard and is content to cruise at about 40 MPH. There's plenty of authenticity under the hood. ranging from the Ford Green paint on the block to the original-style hose clamps. to the flat copper leads for the spark plugs. Although a lot of owners are tempted to "upgrade" their As. this one looks and feels much like it would have decades ago. The underside is clean and tidy. showing wood floors and a correct exhaust system for that familiar Model A sound. And thanks to its light weight. the 4-wheel mechanical brakes are surprisingly effective as long as the car is driven within its limits. 21-inch welded wire spoke wheels were standard equipment and these carry correct-looking 4. 40/4. 50-21 blackwall tires. A great way to get started in the hobby and a fun addition if you're into originality. this Model A still has a lot of charm.
