Buildingoffofthe365GT/42+2,Ferrariintroducedthe400GT in1976attheParisAutoShow.Thecarwasanevolutionary advancementfromitspredecessor,withabigger,4.8-literV-12 enginethatproduced20morehorsepower,nowupto340.The carretainedthe365GT/4'sPininfarina-styledangular notchbackcoupebody,nowwithfourtaillightsinsteadofsix. PerhapsmostnoteworthywasthatGM'sTurbo-Hydramatic transmissionbecameoptionalequipment,whichoutraged puristsandthepressalike.
Thecarwasspacious,luxurious,andacapableperformerinthe GTclass.Justover500exampleswerebuiltuntil1979(with approximatelytwo-thirdsequippedwithautomatic transmission).In1979the400becamethe400iwhenthe4.8-litermotorreceivedBoschfuelinjectionin ordertosatisfyincreasinglytightemissionsrequirementsthroughouttheworld.
Thisiterationwasproduced until1985,with1,300unitsleavingthefactory(again,roughlytwo-thirdspairedwithautotrans).In1985 Ferrariaddedasmall120-ccbumpinenginedisplacement,andthisfinal4.9litervariantwascalledthe 412.Thiscarcouldberecognizedbyit'sbody-coloredbumpers,differentwheels,andanevenmore luxuriousinteriorthanthewell-appointed400i. ThoseconsideringpurchaseofoneofthesecarsshouldbeawarethatFerrarineverofficiallyimportedthem intotheU.S.,andthereforeallexamplesonourshoreswerebroughtintocomplianceindividuallyinthe UnitedStates.
Thisworkwasproperlyexecutedonmostcars,thoughinsomecasesitwasnot.Tobesafe, acarefulexaminationofEPA/DOTcompliancerecordsandservicehistoryishighlyrecommended.Rust andelectricalissuesarepotentialproblemareasaswell,butthesepainpointstypicallyonlyappearon neglectedcars.Withallofthisinmind,theFerrari400and412seriescarsprovideadrivingexperience thatismorearistocraticandmeasurablydifferentthantheirmoresports-orientedstablemates,yetisevery bitassatisfyingandentertainingfortheirenthusiasticownershipcommunity.
