Description:

1971 Datsun Z-Series 2 door

This is an original California car with low miles and well planned suspension mods. As a California car it has VERY little rust (minor surface rust on the interior floorboards and at the corner of the radiator cross brace). Extensive photos show all the typical rust locations on the Z. The fenders and rear hatch are perfect. The floors and frame rails are very solid. There is no undercoating typically found on 240z's, making it easy to see the condition. The quarter panels, battery tray, wheel lip edges and doglegs are in perfect original condition.

On the down side, the car does have a salvage title (due to a theft) and an automatic transmission. I can’t find any indication of major body repairs. It's in extremely clean condition with a strong running engine (carbs have been rebuilt). It has been repainted in the original yellow. Given the condition of the body, engine and interior I believe the mileage to be correct at only 85K miles. It has a modified suspension, with adjustable coil overs, Eibach springs, Tokico adjustable struts, and front steering control arm spacers (corrects the role center on lowered Z cars). The suspension rides smooth and firm, in my opinion the way the Z should have been set up from the factory (see you tube drive through the CA foothills). It has 17 inch Motegi mags with new Kumho tires. The headlights have been changed to H-4's with the proper wiring modifications and 280-ZX alternator to handle the power demands. This is a very solid car that could be driven anyplace. I would keep this one, but currently have 4 early Z's and it's time to thin the herd. If you’re looking for a solid platform for an engine swap, this is a good candidate considering the salvage title and automatic transmission.

The interior is well preserved overall, although the dash is cracked. The stereo system includes an amplifier and Alpine CD/MP3 detachable face stereo with Polk speakers. The stereo is operational but the amp is not currently connected to the system. The clock works, which is extremely unusual among early Z cars!

The headlights are high power H4’s that require additional power from the alternator. A ZX alternator has installed to handle the power demands of the headlights and stereo system (inherent weak point of the early Z cars). The necessary relays and wiring were installed for the upgraded headlights and stereo.

Mechanically it runs very well, but stumbles when cold unless the choke is used (typical of the early Z). The suspension is very firm but smooth, without any rattles or clunking.

The automatic transmission shifts smooth and solid. It does have a minor leak (a few drops on the garage floor overnight), which can be seen in the underside photos).

This is a very good early 240z (build date of 10/70) and a joy to drive. I am only selling it because I currently own 4 Z's, and with my other toys, the garage is just too cramped to enjoy.

I have numerous you tube videos of the car. See a drive through the CA foothills at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1-PD_BEq_4
