1975 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

A few items of trivia to start the presentation...quiet please!! In 1951 a group of Harley Earl's "Special Projects" crew began work on a GM sports car. Bob McLean designed a general layout for the car which was originally code named, "Opel." William Durant, the founder of GM, said a wallpaper pattern he saw in a Paris hotel in 1908 inspired the bow tie logo. Supposedly, he ripped off a small piece of it and brought it back to Detroit. Myron Scott, at the time Chevrolet's Chief photographer, is credited with coming up with the Corvette name, drawing from the small, fast warships of the "Corvette" class. The Jaguar XK120 is believed to have been the inspiration for the first Corvette.

And now we present, from way back in 1975 a morsel of Corvette history in the flesh, a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray! Drum roll please!!! A consigner stated 71,000 miles and a mechanically sound example gracing our halls here at Classic Auto Mall.

Exterior
This writer has the hots for this C3 design with its rounded rear, low hidden headlight front, front quarter cove and a beautiful rocker trim, the lines on this car just undulate in a hypnotic way. This particular car sports a roll bar in the unlikely event you go topside down, as that canvas will not offer up any protection if you do so. Although the white canvas top is in very nice condition with a clear plastic rear window and no real marring, and it goes very nicely with the Dark Red painted fiberglass, which remains good and shiny. A chromed luggage rack affords a bit more storage space and also offsets the Dark Red. It appears as though the neoprene integrated bumper has either been replaced or has faded faster than the body as it is just a shade lighter on this car. Chrome shows slight pitting, and there are some slightly bubbled up areas and chips in the paint throughout the exterior. 15-inch Corvette wheels are on all 4 corners.

Interior
Medium Saddle leather abounds on the inside of this car as virtually every surface excepting the floors is covered with it. The buckets have an added layer of protection in the form of dual sheepskins covering them. A clean center console swims toward the dash which houses a gaggle of gauges directly above the center. Deep set gauges are in front of the original steering wheel which is wrapped in aftermarket leather. Gold carpet with some stains and smudges floods the floors and also the rear storage area.

Drivetrain
A flip forward of the long hood and we can see a numbers matching 350ci L48 V8. Atop is a single Holley 4-barrel carburetor, and on back a numbers matching Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission. A posi rear which is a carrier from a circa 1965-67 Corvette has 3.36 gears.

Undercarriage
A few smatterings of surface rust are noted but is mostly unremarkable on this front. Solid frame and floorpans as well as C3 suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes are seen. And not to be left out, a Rally suspension has been optioned on this car.

Drive-Ability
It fired right up, and we took it through our test track paces with no problems to report. It has decent acceleration, and cruises nice and smoothly.

Deep red with a white convertible, snazzy Corvette wheels, saddle tan interior and it is mostly an original Corvette with a numbers matching engine and transmission.
