1971 Chevrolet Camaro

1971 Chevy Camaro true restomod

I bought the car from an estate sale 3 years ago to have a dependable classic car to drive to work on sunny days. The history of previous restoration was missing but I took a risk and purchased it. Needless to say, there were many, many issues that had to be resolved prior to it being a dependable driver (beware of "professional inspectors"). Over the next year, I spent close to 30K more than purchase price and hundreds of hours fixing the problems from its previous "restoration". I have receipts for all the parts and outside labor on the car.

The good news was that the car was rust free. In all the below listed work, I have seen, amazingly, no serious rust. The engine was reported to be a corvette engine that received a complete rebuild with advanced cams etc. I have no proof due to the engine block numbers being painted over. I had it dyno tested at 325 hp at rear wheels making it close 380 hp crank. The engine runs well and has good compression. It has a nice loupe at idle. The transmission is Tremec T5 / Borg warner which I had professionally rebuilt with new internals and clutch. I had a new stainless tank with in-tank fuel pump and custom high flow exhaust with cross pipe placed. Nice and loud with acceleration but won't get the HOA complaining when driving slow in neighborhood.

The drop and entire suspension was done poorly so I replaced both front and rear suspension with Detroit Speed (I feel they are the best for Camaros). The front received tube style a-arms with all new bushings, coil over shocks, 2inch drop spindle, dropped tie rods (no bump steer) and Baer Brakes Track 4 complete system. Next was Detroit speed power rack and pinion and Flamming River steering column and steering wheel. Rear suspension is Detroit speed 3 inch drop leaf spring kit with polyurethane bushings along with Baer Brakes SS4 with barking brakes. Rear end is standard 10 bolt c-clip that received new bearings with above work. New power brake vacuum canister and Baer red master cylinder with adjustable front/rear valve. I replaced the radiator with high flow aluminum radiator and Derale high flow dual fan and shroud kit and control module along with all hoses. Runs cool in Houston summer traffic.

The interior is completely redone with TMI seats and matching rear seat covers and door panels. I stripped the interior entirely including headliner and started with dynamat, dynaliner on all interior surfaces including roof and dynapad on all floor surfaces. New headliner and new high end carpet. The car is quiet inside and stays cool. A/C from Vintage Air under dash with electric controlled vents works great. I replaced all instruments with high end Speedhut gauges with the contrast red for tach and speed odometer. All are programmable. I spent countless hours under dash chasing all wires and fixing for correct connections (soldered) and labeling for future. Stereo is Rockford Fosgate with manual and Bluetooth connection with apple and android car play (control your phone from unit) with 6 speakers (top line Rockford Fosgate). Window regulators and internal gear replaced. Power door locks and alarm were placed for easy entrance and exit.

Exterior has decent paint and it shows very nice but not perfect. Several chips need to be fixed and someone bent the rear driver wheel inner lip probably for clearance due to previous poor rear drop (not noticeable unless you bend down and look). Front windshield and rear glass have small leaks (drops of water on inside when I wash the car). Car gap lines good but not perfect. Car does have all LED lights including headlights, side markers and bright led tail lights (all four light up for brake).

This car is a good and dependable restomod daily driver that turns heads constantly. It is fast, corners well and brakes great. I drive 45 miles one way downtown frequently. I am forgetting much more work that I have paid for or have done to car. I am a surgeon in Houston and I am selling because I have another restomod that just came out of the shop. I will be as honest as possible about the pros and cons of this car because it is more important to me to have a good transaction than to sell this car. Can take car long distance without problem.
