Price: - Item location: Amherst, New Hampshire, United States
Description:

1986 Chevrolet Camaro

1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z
Offered for your consideration at "NO RESERVE" is what is believed to be an unmolested 1986 IROC Z in the possession of 2 families throughout it's life.
BACKGROUND:
I purchased this vehicle last year with the intention of restoring with my son and adding it to an IROC collection, which at the time included a white 1986 and a very rare silver 2 owner 1985. The white IROC has been sold and shipped to Austria for full restoration and addition to a collection. This one now needs to go as well as I am out of storage space and just purchased a Gen II Trans Am as it's replacement.
The gentleman I purchased it from advised he personally knew the original owning family and bought it direct from them. It was originally purchased 12/6/1985 from what appears to be Porter Chevrolet in Cambridge, MA and titled and registered in Groton, MA. The original owner compiled a document binder which is in my possession and will be included with the sale. Same includes:
Original Pre-Delivery Inspection SheetOriginal "Commitment to Excellence" Owner ID Card, metal key ring #2279919 and support materials
Marketing mailer from Porter ChevroletPhotocopy of original Massachusetts titleOriginal GMPP / MIC warranty and insurance documentsOriginal Warranty ManualOriginal Tire WarrantiesOwners Manual in very good conditionMaintenance schedule pamphletPhotos of the car back in what appears to be the late 90's / early 2000's
Please note: I ran the Carfax Report at purchase and will provide a copy with the above documents. It is very clean and only shows a "potential" mileage rollover. When I questioned the prior owner, he advised there were some entry errors at locations servicing the car which were not updated. There are numerous inspection / repair records in sequence which supported his explanation. I was confident enough in the explanation, condition of the vehicle and no evidence of odometer tampering to believe the listed mileage is in fact correct. No accidents are noted nor do any appear to be apparent on the body. The Autochek report also does not match Carfax. Thus, while I am confident this is not a high mileage vehicle by any means, I cannot certify same to be 100% factual.

COSMETICS
Exterior
This is a very solid car and appears much to its original state with a possible panel refinish or two over the years. It has never been a complete refinish from what I can tell. Inner door and jambs are in nice shape with unmolested driver door VIN and GVWR stickers. While the side panels still have gloss and shine, the upper surfaces and soft bumpers have the traditional clear coat adhesion issues, and, the main reason for the need to refinish. I only noted one small surface rust spot beginning over the left rear quarter wheel well as shown in one of the photos. Other than an occasion slight ding, that could most likely be pulled out by paintless dent repair, there is a small dent in the right rear quarter as also shown. It is nothing of substance and an easy repair. All ground effects are in good condition with no cracking or breakage. Glass is also in very good shape as are t-roofs, other than oxidation on black moldings which can be refinished. T-Roof seals appear in good condition, but, cannot attest to whether they leak or not as the car has been in the garage. All original IROC rims are in very nice shape with absolutely NO curb rash.
Interior
The seats are in very nice condition, but, could us a nice cleaning. Some fading is noted on the very upper portion of rear seats. My plan was to re-dye them as the material is still very nice. Small hole noted on driver seat lumbar area in essentially the location all have from entry and exit. One additional small hole, approximately 1/4" in upper driver seat right. Carpet is worn from lack of floor mat use and, while usable as a driver, should be replaced for a restoration. Carpets are easily located on line in the $300 + / - range. The rear cargo area carpet is in very nice shape and does not require replacement, just the passenger floor carpet. Headliner cloth is starting to droop but may be able to be re-adhered rather than replaced. It is still in nice shape and the base does not appear to be water damaged. Unfortunately, the dash is cracked in the usual location near both speaker grills. I found one locally in great shape for $100, but, did not act quickly enough. Console cover is not cracked and has original build label as shown in photo. Door panels are in very nice shape and are not warped or show any signs of damage or wear. There was an aftermarket audio head in the vehicle when I bought it which did not work. I discarded same and had not replaced it yet. I cannot attest to the quality or performance of speakers as I have never had a source installed to listen with. Original T-Top storage bag is also present.
MECHANICALLY
I purchased this IROC in NH, about 40 miles from my home. I registered the car and drove from one location to the other and was surprised at how well this car ran and drove. Performance and handling was great! No vibration, pulling or braking concerns were noted. The vehicle had a valid NH state inspection at the time of purchase.
Upon arrival here, the car immediately went into storage and has been there since. Of what I understand from the prior owner, he and the prior owner both also stored it during the winter and the car was only driven summers.
As mentioned, the engine runs great. The car starts immediately on the first turn of the key, even after winter storage. The 700R4 transmission is also very responsive and shifts firm and correctly. A newer Magnaflow or Flowmaster exhaust was installed by the prior owner and sounds great. Not overwhelmingly loud, but, more aggressive sounding and better performance than my '85. While I have not inspected the brakes, there was no pulsation and vehicle stopped straight during the drive home. Tires are not dry cracked and still have some life in them. I believe the prior owner only used them for a couple of seasons.
Below is what I know it needs:
  • Battery - does not currently hold a charge
  • Both plastic fluid jugs (coolant and windshield wiper) due to age, cracking etc.
  • Voltage regulator - vehicle has a newer alternator, but, needs a voltage regulator. I ordered the incorrect one and never installed. My plan was to just replace the alternator in it's entirety.
  • Tachometer behaves erratically as most do. Most likely a printed circuit. I need to repair the one in my '85 as well.
  • A/C does not work. I have not tested for leaks or converted to R134 as of yet.

This car is not one of the many molested IROC's available. It is a true survivor with a very strong original base to work from. I truly hate to sell it and would still love to store it for future refinishing. I just do not have the room with the purchase of the Trans Am and will not leave these cars outside to weather.
Vehicle is on a clear transferable NH registration and is located in Amherst, NH approximately 12 miles over the MA border and an hour from Boston.
I reserve the right to end listing early if no bids are on hand at time of cancellation as vehicle is for sale locally as well.
