1970 CHEVELLE SS 396 4 SPD HOT ROD PUBLISHED # MATCHING BARN FIND

Price: - Item location: Lake Oswego, Oregon, United States
Description:

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396

Up for auction is my 1970 Chevelle SS Convertible 396/4 Speed. It's one of the coolest barn finds to surface in recent years. Hot Rod Magazine Editor Patrick Nichols did an amazing feature on the car when it was in New Jersey. He took video, and 88 detailed pictures. I also took dozens of pics when it arrived in Portland (you can click the links below).

I had plans to restore this car but since being transferred to the Pacific Northwest my plans have changed. If the car does not sell, I will keep it and (eventually) do a frame-off restoration. Selling this car is my personal choice, not a necessity.

The original owner was a GM employee and this was a special order car (her name is on the build sheet). The car was parked in 1990 with only 53K original miles, and has remained unrestored. All numbers match (VIN, build sheet, and Protect-o-Plate).. the motor, transmission, and rear are all original. Incredible documentation. While the car looks like it has "excessive wear/tear" and high mileage, the original owner recorded the current mileage on the bill of sale as 53K actual... I will not debate the mileage with anyone.

The total number of 1970 Chevelle L34 SS396 convertibles built was approximately 1,100. If you consider the rare Desert Sand exterior color... this car quite possibly is 1 of less than 100 built. This is a fully documented Super Sport Convertible with all parts numbers matching, and a 4 speed.

After nearly 50 years there aren't many (real) ones left... You can find restored recreations/tributes, or clones selling for almost $100K. They are not real and many are not accurate. This rare car is worthy of a full restoration.

The car will need a full trunk pan and both quarter panels (common for a convertible). The driver front floors will need a patch (see pics), not a complete pan replacement. The front fenders will both need a patch, but are solid where they bolt to the body. The Cowl Induction hood and trunk lid are both solid, and clean underneath. The passenger door is very solid; the driver side will need a patch. The bottoms of both doors are clean, and the weather-stripping still looks good. The inner/outer rockers and frame are both perfect. This Chevelle has none of the salt rust damage normally found on Midwest cars...

All chrome needs to be replaced. The wheels will need new paint, but all 5 are original A0. I just added new BFG tires in the correct size, a new clutch, and new front brakes (including rotors). Back brakes will need to be replaced, but that is for the next owner. I saved the original clutch/brakes inspection. The dash pad is perfect, not a crack.

Please look over pics... they speak for themselves. I will do my best to answer all questions quickly. If you need additional pics, please ask. I recently paid $1600 for coast to coast enclosed shipping (NJ-OR) to give you an idea.
