1968 427 Dana Camaro
1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS/RS
1968 427 Dana Camaro
As first generation Super Camaros go they are rare as hen’s teeth. They are known as the conversion “Day Two” cars built only by a selected few high performance Chevrolet dealerships across the country. This era ended with the introduction of the 69 COPO Camaro with a 427 straight from the factory’s back door.Dana Camaros are the rarest of all the high performance Chevrolet dealerships.Dana Chevrolet was the only west coast High Performance Chevrolet dealership.Approximately 50 each 427 Dana Camaros were produced.Out of the original 50 approximately a dozen or so have surfaced over the years.
I built this car with the idea that it would be built exactly as original as possible. No one has attempted to build a reproduction of a 427 Dana Camaro. This is the only one that exist.I have as much time in research as I do into the build.Notable people involved from an historical perspective in advising me on the build namely Dale Armstrong of drag racing fame that worked at Dana Chevrolet from the fall of 66 when they opened until closing 18 months later. He was involved in most all of the 427 Dana Camaro Conversions. His insight on particulars of the build was priceless. He is best known as the crew chief for Kenny Bernstein’s top fuel dragster sponsored by Budweiser in the late 80’s and early 90’s when they broke the 300 mph barrier in 92.He has gone down in history as bringing major innovations to the sport such as dual magnetos and multi disc clutches that led to the record. He is a hall of famer who is a core part of drag racing historical past.He passed away 3 years ago this coming November.
Other notable people were also involved as advisors to me on the build. The quality and integrity of the build is top shelf with all aspects thoroughly thought out in an effort to build an outstanding car that also represents a part of history of the high performance wars back in the late 60’s.No original 427 Dana Camaro has ever gone to auction and can be valued at 400K and up.This car can be purchased for much less and you can drive and enjoy. The car has been widely recognized worldwide and has been featured in a number of publications in print and online including Camaro Performers magazine, which it made the cover with a four page feature article on how the car was built by nationally recognized photographer Chris Shelton who shoots for many classic car and Hot Rod magazines.
Some of the key features of the car are as follows as a complete nut and bolt restoration.
Correct over the counter dealer purchased 427 439 block L71 Tri Power with square port heads and solid lifters.Block has original stamping that is very close to an existing original 427 Dana Camaro with paperwork block stamping. An NOS L88 cam was utilized along with a fully restored case iron L88 TI ignition system.Custom old school long tube Doug’s headers and other engine related high performance parts.
Other features are a professionally built M22 with Hurst shifter, 12 bolt 410 posi rear end, Koni shocks, large vintage front sway bar, disc brake, sub frame connectors, Traction Master bars replicated from an original set on an original Dana Camaro, custom made one off Hurst pie platecheater slicks,Harrison 4 core radiator, quick ratio steering arms, tilt column, original wood grain steering wheel, Old school custom exhaust done like back in 68 using Cherry Bomb mufflers and handmade Dana emblems.I even went to the extent of reverse engineering the original Dana Hood and built a mold and brought back the Dana hood after 45 years. The hood on this car is the first out of the mold. The car is an original factory Matador Red deluxe hounds tooth matching the firewall data plate.
