On May 1st, 1986 after years of R & D, Lotus in England fired up the 1st ZR-1 V-8 Engine

On July 13th, 1989 the 1st Lotus designed ZR-1 Corvette was assembled in Stillwater,OK.

After many years of anemic horsepower Corvettes, Chevrolet once again had a super car

performance Corvette to brag about. I remember buying the 1st ZR-1 to hit the Chevrolet

Showroom's in South Florida. I paid $20,000 over the MSRP of $66,718 or $88,718 so I

could terrorize I-95 and the Florida Turnpike with a brand new ZR-1. It's performance was

amazing as I had suffered through almost 30 years of lackluster Corvette performance from

the factory stock Corvettes that came from St. Louis and later Bowling Green.

The Corvette was back and the ZR-1 was "one bad boy!

The factory states 405HP at 5800rpms but if you keep your foot in it, this baby

will rev to 7000rpms in a heartbeat.

The heart of the package was the 405hp LT5 engine. Displacing the familiar 350 cubic inches and sharing the same

4.4" bore spacing as the regular small-block Chevrolet V-8, it was nonetheless, a completely different engine.

Using an all aluminum cylinder block and heads, the Lotus Engineering design (along with Chevrolet) featured

state-of-the-art four valve per cylinder double overhead cam heads. This made for an engine that produced 375hp.

Power went up for the 1993-95 models to 405 through manifolding and valvetrain modifications.

The engines themselves were manufactured and assembled by Mercury Marine, in Stillwater OK. The completed engines

were then shipped to the Corvette assembly plant at Bowling Green, KY for assembly into specially modified Corvettes.

At a quick glance, it was almost impossible to tell the difference between the ZR-1 and regular Corvettes.

Because the ZR-1 used Goodyear P315/535/ZR17 tires mounted on wider 11" rims on the rear, the ZR-1 Corvette is 3" wider

and 1" longer than the regular coupe. All ZR-1s had the third stop light mounted above the rear window.

A small ZR-1 emblem was located on the right rear fascia below the taillights and a ZR-1 emblem above the side fender vents.

A unique feature of the engine was it's intake system. Each cylinder was fed by two runners-one for each intake valve.

During normal driving, each cylinder was fed by one runner.Through the use of a dash controlled switch, whenever additional

power was required, the driver could turn the switch allowing the other runner to come into play.

All ZR-1 Corvettes were equipped with the Borg Warner T-6 six-speed manual transmission, the Selective Ride Control system

which allowed driver control of the suspension, Bose stereo, air conditioning and basically, every other Corvette option.
