1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

Up for auction is a beautiful 1970 L78 SS Chevelle that has it's authenticity verified by it's original build sheet. Rare car as only 2144 were produced from September of 1969 through the second week of December...and this is one of last ones built as it was built at the very end of November (see picture of trim tag indicating build of 11D). Shortly after production ceased, the 454 was introduced, but before it was, the L78 396-375HP was the choice of the racing population. As with most L78's, the odometer's usually remained low due to spending most of it's early life at the track and this car is no different...odometer shows 55,000 and change. It even still retains one of it's original T-3 headlights (high beam on the driver side.) And as with most L78's, they were short on options due to their racing nature and this one's only convenience option is an AM-FM radio and it's still remains in the car to this day. Not even bucket seats as the majority of the these cars were factory bench seat 4 speed racers.

Paint and body on the L78 is in beautiful condition. Was restored originally 8-9 years ago and 2 full GM quarters were installed neatly and expertly. Was repainted again 2 years ago. All gaps are even and smooth. Deep, high gloss black paint applied in base coat/clear coat...and has a “wet” appearance to it. There is zero orange peel or runs in the paint anywhere. No dings, dents or scratches. I would rate the paint about a 9.1-9.2 out of 10. Both bumpers were replaced and look new. All chrome and stainless are in excellent shape...and are either new or excellent original. She sits on new “correct” Goodyear Polyglas F70-14's...and they are mounted on the “original to the car” “YA” date code correct SS wheels. A new 4 wheel “lazer” allignment was performed over the summer and she goes straight down the road and brakes just as evenly without any drifting or pulling.

The interior is in excellent condition with no rips, tears or unusual wear. All gauges function correctly, but the clock does not work. Cowl induction hood functions as it should as it stays open when not running and closes as soon as you start it...but take it though the “mid-range” at about 4200-4300 RPM's and she opens up to let you know she's going to need to breathe more. It runs very well and runs cool at around 190 degrees. Needs no mechanical work. Car is very, very fast as it's been dynoed at 425HP. Lots of extra horsepower goodies have been added to the period correct 396 (nom) as the heads have been worked and a ¾ racing cam was included. Lots of extra chrome and adornments have been added to the engine and it's compartment, but can also be changed back easily to a stock appearance if you so choose. Factory correct styled bench seat Muncie shifter handle is attached to a Hurst shifter mounted to the Muncie transmission. Shifts perfectly and effortlessly...each gear seems to click in very neatly and also downshifts just as easily without any tugging or grinding. The original date code correct 4:11 posi rear is still in the car (see picture). The gears were swapped out for a more “streetable” set of 3:31's.

The Chevelle is super solid and rust free. It is very clean underneath although not restored to look like a trailer queen. It can be done with little effort as there is minimal undercoating on the undercarriage. But I've enjoyed driving it without worrying about having to put it up on a lift to wipe it down underneath every time I take it out...kind of the best of both worlds as you have show car quality paint to drive around and be admired. But make no mistake as this is anything but a “driver”....it's a very, very nice # 2 type car that will consistently take home the trophies at the local cars shows and events.

I welcome anyone who would like to inspect the Chevelle in person and can even take out for a ride (conditions permitting) I've set the reserve very fairly and reasonably for a documented rare L78 Chevelle. Calls are preferred to texts as I would gladly do a walk around on the car while on the phone. Please don't text offers or ask what the reserve is as I want to be fair to the bidders. If you want to come in person to make an offer, I will either say yes or no...and if yes, I will set up a “Buy it now”. If you have less than 10 feedbacks or have a history of bid retractions, do not bid unless you call me first, otherwise I will remove the bid. Any questions, please call (914) 494-2143...will take calls up until 10:00PM E.ST. Good luck. Bruce
