1965 Chevrolet Corvette

1965 Corvettes are perhaps the biggest bargain of the mid-year period. They're not iconic '63s yet they have all the upgrades that came in '65 most notably 4-wheel disc brakes and with a small block and 4-speed gearbox this one can pretty much run with the big dogs that would come a few years later. Obviously if you like driving your Corvette this handsome convertible represents tremendous bang for the buck.If you drive any mid-year Corvette especially a convertible you're going to get noticed. Subject to a cosmetic freshening about ten years ago this one remains in very good condition that's what most folks would consider a high-grade "driver." The fiberglass prep was expertly done and while to the judges a flawed Corvette is a perfect Corvette this one has no such pretensions. The surface was sanded until it was smooth and flat the gaps were expertly aligned and the finish is two-stage urethane that's smoother deeper and shinier than anything rolling out of the St. Louis plant in 1965. There's a bit of pearl in the finish which doesn't detract from the '60s look but definitely makes this car glow in the sunlight. A few touch-ups here and there are evidence that this Corvette was built to be enjoyed but none of them are serious enough to warrant additional work. In addition all the chrome shines up beautifully the stainless looks like it spent some time with a buffing wheel and the shiny rocker trim looks freshly minted. The bright red interior is a great combination of original and restored parts all working together to make this Corvette a great place to spend some time. The seat covers are correct and these seats are some of the most inviting buckets I've seen in a long time; they're just begging you to slide behind the wheel aren't they? The gauges have bright faces and the lenses are clear and they all work like they should. Recent carpets add to the factory-fresh feeling but the door panels may very well be original and aside from a small crack where the driver's elbow might rest they're in great condition. The radio is a rare AM/FM unit with that unique vertical orientation and there's a woodgrained steering wheel that appears to be original as well. A recent black vinyl convertible top fits well and provides great contrast although you'll probably never see it again after you get this car home. The block is a 327 cubic inch V8 that makes plenty of power to be entertaining on the road. It certainly looks right under that chrome air cleaner and with a pair of gorgeous finned valve covers and while it's no longer detailed for show you can see plenty of evidence of proper maintenance over the years. There's nothing like a cackling small block and just listening to this one idle is a treat never mind winding it through the all four gears. Ram's horn exhaust manifolds feed a reproduction exhaust system and the front suspension was recently rebuilt so it tracks straight. The Muncie M20 4-speed has been fully rebuilt and out back a set of 3.36 gears make it street friendly no matter what you're doing. Four-wheel discs were new in '65 and much welcome given the car's performance and it rides on pretty knock-off wheels with recent 215/70/14 whitewall radials.Built to drive this '65 Corvette offers all the great looks of the C2 with strong small block power and a top that goes down all at a very reasonable price.
