Over the past 105 years, Chevrolet has built such a vast empire of lovable offerings that some of them just seem to get overlooked. Possibly the most substantial victim of that unfortunate phenomenon is the storied Monte Carlo. Introduced in 1970, and proudly parked in over half a million driveways during its first three years of production, the brand's 'personal luxury coupe' was decidedly cool. And, not as ostentatious as a Corvette or as boorish as a Camaro, the car spent most of its life as the poster child for evolving automotive tastes. This classy Monte is a solid cruiser that's benefitted from careful restoration as needed. And if you're looking for an awesome classic that's clean, attractive and ready to roll, you simply won't find more muscle for the money!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Counter to the bowtie brand's Camaro offering, the Monte Carlo sought a more refined and sophisticated buyer. In fact, one could almost say that Chevy employed the same proven tactic that had seen Plymouth successfully market the GTX next to the Road Runner. Mixing correct cosmetics with a killer stance, this attractive coupe definitely conveys a genteel aesthetic in the realm of broad-shouldered muscle cars. In the summer of 2009, the car's straight 'coke bottle' sheetmetal was stripped bare and carefully refinished in deep black 2-stage. Once that pigment was buffed to an excellent shine, a fresh vinyl roof was supplemented with factory-spec trim. And today, this knight rolls as one razor-sharp A-Body that looks good, runs great and is poised to turn heads for years to come!

ENGINE

In its heyday Chevrolet's 402 cubic inch big block played the role of all things to all people. Introduced in 1970, it continued to be marketed as popular Turbo-Jet 396 offerings in the Chevelle line, was labeled Turbo-Jet 400 for Monte Carlo duty, and retained an eponymous identity in Chevy trucks. Lift this coupe's long hood and you'll find an era-correct, 402 cubic inch V8 that's branded as a 396 Turbo-Jet mill. Power originates when wind whips from a painted, dual-snorkel air cleaner in to a modern Holley carburetor, which is fed by polished fluid lines and an AC mechanical pump. That air/fuel mixture travels to factory-spec heads, which ride under polished valve covers. Sparks get sequenced from a traditional points distributor to fresh Packard TV R Suppression cables. Spent gases roar through aluminized pipes via restored exhaust manifolds. Charge comes courtesy of a fresh alternator, which spins beside a 7-blade pulley fan, factory power steering and a modern Sanden AC compressor. A correctly decaled radiator makes good use of pliable GM hoses and a correct AC cap. And details like satin fenders, bright engine skin, a fresh Delco Moraine brake booster and a modern Duralast battery create attractive, purposeful aesthetics.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Beneath this Chevy you'll find a clean undercarriage that appears to have benefitted from quite a bit of restoration. Rock-solid floorpans are dressed in a distinct combination of rugged undercoating and Satin Black paint. Behind the stout big block, a proven Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed jerks a familiar 12-bolt axle. That excellent drivetrain floats in a fully restored F41 Sports Suspension, which follows factory power steering with two power-assisted discs and two power-assisted drums. As previously mentioned, spent gases race from cast iron manifolds in to a series of aluminized pipes, which hang an H-shaped crossover in front of rowdy Xlerator mufflers and polished stainless tips. And power meets the pavement through chrome REV 100s, which spin 225/70R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As in front of 255/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As.

INTERIOR

Pop the doors and you'll find a stylish Black interior that's way too crisp to be original equipment. Everything starts with high-back seats that look good, feel great and are all-day comfortable. Between those thrones, a wood-trimmed console provides tapered real estate for a factory horseshoe shifter. At the front of that island, a wood-trimmed dash founds a full set of gauges behind Vintage Air climate control and a correct Delco radio. That trio is framed in a tight headliner, attractive door panels and stain-free carpet that's protected by "Monte Carlo" branded floor mats. The driver pilots a familiar Super Sport steering wheel. And passengers stow luggage in a lit trunk that's finished with correct tools and a full-size spare tire.
