1976 Cadillac DeVille

1976 Cadillac Coupe DeVille

1976 presented itself to luxury car buyers as the final opportunity to purchase a brand new, full-sized Cadillac motorcar. The American luxury car had been a tradition for decades and identified its owners as among the fortunate few who had "made it." Successful in business, investments, or just lucky enough to be born into a wealthy family, driving a large luxury car was one of the benefits of having money. A status symbol, for certain. But also, a luxury conveyance that provided the appropriate atmosphere for those who appreciated the finest in everything they purchased. The Cadillac motorcar had long established itself as one of the world's finest automobiles, and it was deemed to be the ultimate expression of achievement in America. Some identified Cadillacs with older, established people, yet the fact remains that many a young entrepreneur, upon realizing financial success and independence, went out and purchased a Cadillac as one of their first expenditures. Joining the Cadillac club was never exclusively for the retired set.

For consignment a large steel example of mid 70's square and rectangle design. Due to the oil embargo, and quickly rising gas prices, large examples as such were going to go by way of the tail fin. With its original engine, and all original interior, some "spiffing" will need to be completed, and bodywork should also be in the mix of your aspirations.

Exterior
All bathed in dark blue, we can see numerous scratches, dents and dings and imperfections on this paint. Drivers side shows invasive rust at the rear of the door, and this is also seeping into the rocker panels, and lower interior doors. A puffy blue vinyl Landau style top covers the back passengers and affords a side window cut in between B and C pillars. Fender skirts are installed, and chrome is good overall with some dimpling here and there. The plastic flexible fill panels have gone missing around the rear bumper and taillights. Polished spoked wheel covers are on all 4 corners of this long car.

Interior
The large pillowy front bench is showing some fading and cracking on the blue leather. The rear bench is good, carpet is stained, and headliner is good and is interrupted by a glass sunroof. Door panels also in blue leather and wood appliqu with chromed window, mirror, and door lock power switches. A cracked and peeling original steering wheel fronts a clean dash in blue plastic, also with wood appliqu. Slight corrosion is showing on the numbers of the speedometer.

Drivetrain
A 500ci V-8 is under the hood and has some major surface rust. This car cranks but we have not gotten it to run. An automatic transmission is on the back.

Undercarriage
Heavy surface rust is seen throughout, however frame wise structural integrity has been maintained. Inside the lower rocker panels there is invasive rust. Floorpans are in good condition and may have at one point been replaced.

This example could use some TLC on the body side, and possibly on the engine, as we could not get it to start. The last year for the big Caddy sure to go down in history as the surviving large car thumbing its nose at the gas crisis.
