Description:

1971 Cadillac Eldorado Base Convertible 2-Door

In 1971, after 4 consecutive years with no convertible Eldorado in the product lineup, Cadillac reintroduced the Eldorado Convertible with the all new 500 big block as a replacement for the 472 powered DeVille Convertible. The 501 series 500 c.i.d engine was introduced in 1970 and was only fitted in those early years into the Eldorado. It still remains to this day the largest production engine ever made. What I have for you today is the DOCUMENTED VERY FIRST, NUMERO UNO, BODY TAG #1, SERIAL #2 Eldorado Convertible to ever roll off the production line with a factory 500 big block. She is a running and driving project ready for your full automotive attention. The body clearly has a lot of cancer, but other than the ugly that you see, there is some good news -
  • The engine with a numbers-correct reman 780cfm Quadrajet starts easily and runs well (look up using key words "'71 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible #1" on YouTube to see a video of the engine compartment with motor running).
  • The top goes up and down, and in fact, the scissor-top frame is in exceptional condition.
  • The glass all around is intact, including the defroster glass in the rag-top.
  • The window motors all function, although the window tracks need help.
  • The bumpers are straight, and all the bright work appears to be accounted for. The hood emblem is in the glove box.
  • The back seat looks to be in good shape, and you could probably treat the front seats and continue to use them for a while.
  • The wheel wells are visibly solid, as is the trunk floor, although you can see where the right quarter panel has rusted out.
  • Three of the floor pans also are visibly intact, only the passenger rear has an obvious hole in it.
It runs down the road smoothly on fresh tires, steers with no issue, and stops... more or less. It feels and smells like the front left caliper may be hanging up. Driving it may free it up, but plan on the brakes needing a complete overhaul. In fact, plan on just about everything on this car needing some measure of your attention. This car clearly needs a body specialist, and I am just not that guy. So please, buy this car, love it, and restore it! Don't make me use it as a parts car for my '72!
Happy bidding!
