THE 1960 CADILLAC

The 1960 model year was an impressive beginning to a new decade. During the Sixties, Cadillac styling became more graceful and restrained as Bill Mitchell gradually unified the design. Few new engineering advances were introduced, but orderly design development and a conservative styling approach set Cadillac apart from other luxury makes and maintained its reputation as "The Standard of the World." To the American public, Cadillac remained a symbol of prestige, success, and good taste.

The 1960 Cadillac began the evolutionary process of toning down the excesses of 1959. Although it continued the jet plane styling theme of the '59, its fins were clipped (but still prominent) and Ed Taylor redesigned the taillights into a thin strip of red plastic neatly blended into the end of the fin. Supplementing that was a second taillight in each "exhaust port," now a vertical oval that still housed the backup light as well. The simplified grille lost its horizontal divider bar and the front bumper was also simpler and less bulky. New, too, was the instrument panel. All in all, the 1960 Cadillac had a more formal, yet youthful, look.

The Cadillac Series Sixty-Two convertible was priced at $5455.This was a very expensive automobile in its day. The Series Sixty-Two models were distinguished by a narrow full-length chrome rub strip that ran from behind the front wheel to the rear bumper.

The 390 cubic inch V-8 had a cast iron block, overhead valves, five main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters, and aRochesterfour-barrel carburetor. The bore and stroke were 4.00 x 3.875inches, the compression ratio was 10.5:1, and the brake horsepower was 325 @ 4800 rpm.

Cadillac's 1960 bold sweeping lines stood out as a modern masterpiece of automotive sculpture. Every luxury and convenience coddled both driver and passengers; with comfort enough for even the longest journey. Here was a car designed for comfort, but one that offered a pleasant surprise when a quick response was needed -- 0-60 mph in just 10.3 seconds. According to contemporary road tests, gas economy ratings for 1960 Cadillac’s were approximately 14 miles per gallon at a steady 60 miles per hour.Cadillac engineering and design had come together in creating a sumptuous machine.

The 1960 Cadillac was designed during a period of great change within GM.Harley Earl was heavily involved with the 1959's, but Bill Mitchell took over after Earl's retirement and was mainly responsible for the 1960 models.Under Mitchell, a new freshness permeated the air -- a freshness and youthfulness that was to become the hallmark of most cars developed under his regime.Earl, Mitchell, Hols, Glowacke, and Scheelk designed a car whose time isnow. It is seen everywhere these days: TV, movies, and even in commercials for new Cadillac’s!People can't get enough of the 1960 Cadillac's beauty, and prices are escalating accordingly. It is such a welcome relief to see one parked among the little boxes-on-wheels of today. Ah, the genius of it all.

Car Lifemagazine selected the 1960 Cadillac as its "Best buy in the luxury field."

The dealer Data Book for 1960 says thatCadillac cannot be fully appreciated without experiencing the surpassing comfort of its ride, the remarkable ease and safety of its steering and braking and the exceeding flexibility and sureness of its response to the driver's every demand.

Vehicle Condition:

IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT THIS 1960 CADILLAC CONVERTIBLE IS STRIKINGLY BEAUTIFUL! IT RUNS AND DRIVES WELL!

This 1960 Cadillac convertible is a combination of very good original survivor that has had some restorative work done to freshen up its appearance. It is a beautiful Cadi that should be driven and enjoyed. This 1960 Cadillac is 57 years old, so some signs of age and minor imperfections here and there are to be expected.

The exterior was repainted, the seats reupholstered and the carpet replaced by a previous owner. I just had a new rear window installed in the convertible top. The transmission was rebuilt by the previous owner and I have put very few miles on this Cadi since I acquired it. It runs and drives very well.I noticed that the choke cup and spring are not on the carburetor, but the engine starts right up and idles without stalling. There are a few very minor not obvious indentations to the body. The exterior chrome is in good condition, and there are only a few very minor bumper scratches. The trunk chrome strip has some pitting. A previous owner sealed some trim edges with clear silicone. I do not believe that the door and rear ¼ panel side spears are correct for this model. The 1/4 panel spears are in fair condition. The headlights have been upgraded to H4’s for better lighting when driving at night. The side window glass appears to be original as it bears the correct markings, however the windshield may have been replaced. There is a wiper scuff on each side of the windshield, but it is just on the surface and I believe it can be polished out. The chrome surrounds for the side windows are excellent, except for the one single vertical piece on the right rear window that has pitting. The exterior of the black convertible top is in very good condition with good black color and a brand new rear window.

The interior is in very good condition. The upholstery is white with red soft cloth inserts that make them very comfortable to sit on, especially on a very hot or cold day.The original clock, wipers, windshield washer, instrument lights, original radio, and tape deck are not working, not surprising for a car this age.I have made no attempt to repair these. The 6-way power seat works, but the seat does not move forward or backwards.I have made no attempt to repair this as I am 5’10” and the seat placement is perfect for me, but I suspect this is a very simple repair, perhaps just the switch or a loose wire. The instruments and door panels look very nice. There are two cracks in the factory original padded dash near the windshield, and a small amount of distortion. All power windows operate from the driver’s control switches (the switch for the passenger side rear window needs to be pushed hard). The rear window switches in the back seat do not operate. Here again this may be something very simple such as the switch contacts or a wire. I have not attempted to repair because this was not important to me. The carpet was replaced and is in excellent condition.

The engine bay is in excellent original condition. A previous owner repainted the engine valve covers. Inspection reveals some small rust areas to thinner sheet metal, mostly under the rear portion of the car behind the rear axle, but nothing that compromises this Cadi's integrity. The bottoms of the body area behind the rear wheels shows signs of previous repair. There is no rust at all to the floor pans. New mufflers, exhaust pipes from the mufflers back and tail pipes have just been installed. This is a strikingly beautiful Cadillac that will give its new owner driving enjoyment and pride of ownership.

Please note that the California license plate shown in the photos is not included with the vehicle.

The odometer reading above is not believed to reflect this Cadi’s actual total miles.

This Cadillac will turn heads and gets thumbs up virtually everywhere it goes!
