This 1927 Bugatti Type 35 Roadster was built in 1995. It is titled and registered as a "1927 BUGATTI" (Not a replica.) In 1998 it was acquired by Alyce Cornyn-Selby, a nationally-known public speaker, author of a dozen books and award-winning script writer and film producer. Upon her purchase, Alyce painted the Roadster her trademark purple color (60's Mopar "Plum Crazy") with bright red wheels.
Following the events of September 11, 2001, Alyce was determined to see the United States from coast-to-coast in her Roadster; her goal being to drive from Pacific City, Oregon to Atlantic City, New Jersey. Before setting out on the adventure, the car was completely refreshed mechanically, with the installation of a beefier, fully rebuilt VW 1600 cc engine, along with other items to make it capable of long-distance travel at highway speeds. Some things Alyce did NOT add were a radio, heater, windshield wipers or top. In fact, she dubbed the car "A Seno Scorpeto," which loosely translated from Italian, means "Topless."
On April 4, 2002, 55 year old Alyce set out alone from Pacific City, Oregon in "Seno" and headed east. Through sun, wind, snow and rain she racked up the miles and stories; including being robbed of all of her money, credit cards and car keys in Illinois; chased across Arkansas by a pickup truck; bit by a dog in St. Paul, Minnesota; and after several blown tires, made it to Atlantic City on April 29, 2002. Reporters and news crews had followed her journey, telling of her adventures along the way. Once she met her goal, she decided to make the return trip to Oregon in the car; through Maine, Vermont, New York, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and back to Pacific City, Oregon, where she arrived on June 28, 2002; 8,458 miles from when she left.
Alyce recounted her remarkable 3-month journey including the stories of the sites and people she met along the way through nearly 30 states in her 300 page book, HIT THE ROAD; published in 2003. It became a personal best-seller and in years to come, Alyce was a featured speaker at many automotive events, often bringing "Seno" with her to show the always amazed onlookers.
Alyce Cornyn-Selby passed away recently at age 70. Now her amazing car is being offered here at auction.
"Seno" has been recently mechanically refreshed. It runs and drives great and is a real kick on the road. The VW 1600 engine that was rebuilt just before Alyce's 2002 adventure now has approximately 10,000 miles on it. It runs smoothly with no smoke or unusual noises. Plenty of power. 4-speed manual gearbox. This car has always been maintained by VW/Porshce specialists. The engine is at the rear, with gas tank and battery under the front hood, with extra space for luggage. Hydraulic brakes stop the car smooth and straight. Tires are excellent and wrap the vintage-style, knock-off hub wire wheels. Holds the road very well. The fiberglass body is in very good condition. The paint is also very good. Please see photos. Bicycle-style front fenders turn with the wheels. Nice brown leatherette upholstery with snap-on tonneau cover for storage. Seat belts. All lights work including headlights, tail lights and turn signals. The instruments consist of a simple speedometer. Inverted Model T steering wheel. The gas tank level is checked with a stick - just as Alyce did. This is truly "seat of the pants motoring" at its best!
This is certainly a unique car with a unique story. It could not be duplicated for any price. It's ready for the road now to create new adventures for the new owner.
