History of the Le Mans cars:When the Healey Hundred was unveiled by the Donald Healey Motor Company at Earls Court in London in October 1952, it created a significant stir. Sleek lines, 100-mph capability, and an affordable price made this the dominant sports car the day it was introduced. It was no wonder that Leonard Lord of British Motor Corporate immediately contracted for the car to be badged as the Austin-Healey and produced in commercial numbers at the Austin plant in Longbridge.
However, by 1955, other competitors had entered the field, and demand was declining. To enable dealers to move stock on the floor, Healey began supplying them with “Le Mans Modification Kits.” The kits included a hotter camshaft, an improved distributor, bigger 1.75-inch carburetors, and a cold-air intake box, upgrades the company had used to good effect at Le Mans in 1954. The kit could upgrade the car’s performance from 90 horsepower to 103 horsepower. Subsequently, dished pistons were added to the kit, adding another seven horsepower.
With good initial success, BMC decided to offer the model as a variant to the new BN2, with the addition of a louvered bonnet with racing strap to be fitted on the Jensen production line and, usually, a two-tone paint scheme for visual identification. Dubbed by the marketing department the 100 M, the new model was introduced at Earls Court in October 1955.

The Austin-Healey 100M is one of the most interesting classic Austin-Healey models in the market. Produced from 1955 to 1956, these Le Mans modified classics boasted larger carburetors, a cold air box to boost airflow to the carburetors, a high-lift camshaft and higher compression pistons. It would also feature a louvered hood and bonnet belt, as well as a two-tone paint scheme on most models. What makes the 1956 Austin-Healey 100M and other models so interesting is that not only was it offered as a factory-built 100M, but also as a Le Mans Engine Modification Kit that could be installed on either a BN1 or BN2 Austin-Healey 100. For this reason, kit 100M cars can be either BN1 or BN2, yet the true factory-built 100M models are strictly BN2 models. In total, there are only 680 factory-built 100M models in existence. An additional 500 kits were sold and installed by Austin-Healey dealers and owners. However, thanks to increased interest in the 100M, there are a growing number of recently converted replicas that use the 100 chassis. When buying a 1955 or 1956 Austin-Healey 100M, it is imperative to understand the origin and history of the car, as this can greatly contribute to its market value.
