After World War II one of the most beautiful sports car to come out of England was the Austin Healey BN-4. The “envelope” sculpture was well in advance of the other sports cars of the early 1950s. It played to rave reviews. Its 4-cylinder engine was known to be a beefy engine and the car handled like it was on rails.

By 1956 the Austin Healey BN4 was equipped with a slick 4-speed transmission (no longer the clunky 3-speed) and the company came out with an upgraded engine in the LeMan “M” which improved the engine performance and with aluminum head, oversized valves and roller rockers and 1 3/4” SU carbs with correct M air box, but also added louvers in the hood and a leather hood strap and other upgraded details to make the car even more desirable, both aesthetically and speed wise

Very few of these Le Mans M cars were produced and today an authentic factory production Le Mans M will sell in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

As might be expected, immediately after the introduction of the Le Mans M Model by the factory, there were modification Le Mans “M” kits installed by the dealers to the basic production1956 Austin Healey 100-4 BN2. The dealer installed Le Mans “M” upgrades when properly done basically you couldn’t distinguish them from the factory installed LeMans M cars.

The car that you see here started life off as a production 1956 Austin Healey BN 4. That is one of the cars that had its Le Mans M Kit installed post production. It now has had a frame up restoration with the best of everything including a few upgraded even beyond the dealer Le Mans M installed modifications.

Such things as front brakes upgraded to Girling Disc (Green Stuff pads) with new Kevlar rear brake shoes. Installed Bilstien shocks on all four corners. The car has even had 7/8” front and 3/4 “ rear sway bars installed. The FIVE wheels have 60 spoke stainless steel wire wheels. The power train work consisted of a Denis Welch aluminum head with oversize valves and roller rockers. A 1 3/4 “ SU carburetors paired with the correct Le Mans M air box. A 4-speed transmission with electric overdrive, which allow this car to cruise effortlessly at well over highway speed limits.

In terms of this high end restoration, all the instruments were restored and an electric fan was installed for additional cooling. Interior is not a plastic or Naugahyde but is beautiful new high grade leather on the seats, mew deluxe carpeting and new never used top and Tonneau and side curtain/windows, all done to the highest quality. When it comes to the exhaust system only the best in stainless steel was used.

Cosmetically this car has 99.9% no damage, chips, dings and the paint could be considered perfect on the straightness on body panels. The car has never seen rain, never in snow (salt) and of course is a NO Rust car! The car has always been garaged in a climate control facility.

Even before all of this work was done, the car was never hit and always straight and the period correct engine was completely rebuilt. Since that time 3,762 miles have been put on the car so that it is completely sorted out!

The electric overdrive works just fine and it is an absolute pleasure to drive and thrill to listen to the exhaust note when the car is under power of acceleration which is very impressive.

The new owner will be supplied with a British Motor Industry Heritage Certificate for this car along with a Post-Production Converted Austin Healey 100M “LeMans” certificate showing that the car left the factory as a standard Austin Healey and was upgraded post-production to a 100 M LeMans.

Just when you thought that things couldn’t get better, this car is owned by an elderly gentleman who just recently made the decision to give up this second love of his life because of his age. He has taken care of this car and babied with prideful care and is very desirous to see that the next owner will continue to do the same. Historical assets such as this Austin Healey needs to be preserved for posterity and periodically exercised to stay in top running condition.
