Description 1933 Auburn 8-101A Boat Tail Speedster
Listed on behalf of the owner.
Located near PORTLAND, OREGON.
Chassis # 5259E
Engine # GU80261
This 1933 Auburn Boat Tail Speedster was acquired by the current owner over 20 years ago from a noted Pacific Northwest Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg collector and restorer. The body and chassis had been restored just prior to the current owner's purchase. The restoration has seasoned and presents nicely today, with only normal signs of use and age. Please see photos, which were just taken for this listing and show the current condition. Wood framing and metal body are excellent with good panel fit and no sag or flex. Lacquer paint in cream color with deep orange moldings and pinstriping is a knockout combination that accentuates the classic Al Leamy design. Red leather interior is gorgeous. Haartz cloth canvas top with side curtains. Chrome shows beautifully. Correct Firestone bias-ply wide whitewall tires. Single Pilot Ray driving light turns with the front wheels to light the curves ahead at night.
Recently, the original Lycoming straight 8 engine was fully and professionally rebuilt by a mechanic who formerly worked at the famous Hill and Vaughan shops in Los Angeles, and is very familiar with these engines. No expense was spared in the rebuild, which included line boring of the cylinders, surfacing the head, new rods and pistons, stainless valves, hardened seats, new bearings, balanced crankshaft, plus rebuilding of all accessory components, including carburetor, water pump/generator, radiator, starter, etc. Manifolds were ceramic coated for better heat control. Nothing was left undone, and everything was done right. All gauges work and register accurately. Auxiliary modern fuel gauge added. Dual ratio rear-end with high/low in all three gears. Easily keeps up with (and passes!) modern freeway traffic. Lockheed hydraulic brakes stop smooth and straight. Today, the car runs absolutely beautifully and has less than 100 miles on the odometer since completion of the engine rebuild. Total of 3,822 miles since body/chassis restoration. It is ready to go anywhere.
If you are looking for an authentic Auburn to enjoy for ACD or Classic Car Club tours, or just an exciting drive in the country, this is the one. It turns heads wherever you go. Has been sparingly used. First time publicly offered for sale from long-term collector ownership. A realistic reserve has been placed on this car in keeping with its condition and rarity. Please bid accordingly.
