3-California Owners from New

During the 10-year production run of Giulietta Spiders fewer than 4,000 Veloce models were built. The first run was the 750 chassis (1” shorter), which was built form 1956-1959. This example was a 1959 production year and one of the last of the 750 chassis cars built. Only 368 Spider Veloces were made that year. Of course, how many of these still remain today…probably very few.

This Alfa was manufactured on July 17th, 1959. It was delivered to NSU Werke in Germany on July 22nd, 1959. Shortly thereafter, it made its way to California where it has been ever since. It has only had three owners. The first lived in the San Jose area and kept the car for over 30-years before selling it to a couple in Southern California. The husband was mostly known for restoring Jeeps and the wife was an elementary school teacher. Shortly after purchasing the car, the husband decided to refurbish the car for his wife to drive. It took him nearly 5-years to complete the project, which included:

Repainting the car its original white

Fresh upholstery (changing from the original red to black)

New soft-top

Rebuilding 1600cc engine and 4-speed transmission

The original 1300cc Veloce motor had failed years ago and was replaced with a 1600cc engine from a 1963 Giulia Spider Normale.

The wife only drove the car for a few months and decided it was not for her. They then sold it to the current owner. The current owner’s daughter was a student of the teacher and when she told her teacher that her dad collected cars and had a few Alfas, they decided to sell it to him.

For the last decade, this owner has simply used this Spider as a fun weekend toy. He performed normal maintenance/services and since it was freshly done when he bought it, there wasn’t much to do to it.

About 6-years ago, the owner decided to track down an original 1300cc Veloce motor with Webers to install in the car in order to make it more correct. He found a freshly rebuilt 1960 Veloce motor that was not being used. He had it crated up and delivered to his storage where it has been since. He just never got around to installing it and since the 1600 engine in the car ran so well, he was not motivated to do the swap. This engine is available for purchase. The buyer of the car gets first right to buy the additional correct motor.

This Veloce is a nice survivor/driver. It appears that all the metal pans are original and very straight. The floor and rockers are very dry and no visible rust. It is apparent that this example was never abused and lived in a dry climate. The paint is now about 12-years old and shows some normal signs of use. The tires are a bit older, but no cracks and have over 75% tread remaining. The interior is equally as nice. The seats have no tears or cracks, just mild wear. There is some discoloration on the passenger seat (see pic). The door panels and carpet look fresh. The passenger window winder works fine, but needs adjustment (see pic). The top appears to be fairly new with no rips and a clear rear window. The dash appears to be original as well with no cracks. All the lights work properly. The wipers do no operate but look complete. The water temp/oil temp/fuel level gauge on the left doesn’t seem to be powering up. We think it might be an electrical ground issue and are having it looked at. The driver side wing window is a bit loose (see pic).

Once you drive one of these Spiders, you realize that in the context of their time, they were amazing machines…way ahead of most of their competition. This example starts easily and idles smooth and quiet. The power feels surprisingly strong which is probably due to the larger displacement motor. The gearbox is delightful…it easily shifts through all the gears with no slipping or grinding. The brakes are not bad considering the technology of the day. However, they still require a bit more pressure if you aren’t used to a power system. Handling is precise and really makes this an ideal car for open cruising on vintage touring events.

California registration is paid through April of 2017.

*Note, California title shows it as a 1960, but it is in fact a 1959 production year.

This Alfa comes with an original owners manual/holder, a car cover, and a spare wheel/tire with cover. The blue California plates and correct yellow California plates are included for California buyers only.
