1990 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series E

*********SELLER NOTE!!- Fri 6-19 at 4pm: The Ebay provided "free" AutoCheck vehicle history report in this listing is total garbage. I have been fighting with Ebay the last day to allow me to post the 11 page Carfax report which shows a total of 35 mileage entries and 90 detailed service records on their report- not the ridiculous 6 mileage and 25 service records that AutoCheck provides...and there is NO mileage inconsistency!!! If you are interested in this car, do yourself a favor and please go to Carfax and get a REAL detailed car history report. -or- I am not sure they will allow me to email a report to interested buyers, but try to message me with your email address and if able, I will email you back a fresh copy I printed off their website this morning.******

1990 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series E. Condition is Used.
First things first- this was NOT a "factory installed" Sportline model. When I purchased the car in December 2016, it had only 18,465 original owner miles, and was a standard 300E. I promptly called the Mercedes Classic Center in Irvine CA and had them research all the individual parts that made up a Sportline, and I ordered them. I had them shipped to me and installed locally. The actual Sportline parts installed include:
Springs, Shocks, Anti sway bars and various suspension bushings. (I further upgraded the sway bars to the larger front W124 "Limo" bar, and the larger rear 500E bar.) Wheels are also the Sportline specific 15 X 7 (8 Hole) factory Mercedes rims and I installed Michelin Pilot Exalto tires sized in the correct Sportline size of 205-60-15. It also has the Sportline leather shift knob, and the Sportline fender badges. All these parts purchases and my service receipts are included with the sale. I did not go as far as sourcing the "Sportline" seats since the original leather ones in the car are in beautiful, virtually new condition. Cost for all the Sportline parts was over $4k and installation another $1.5k.

The CarFax that comes with the car is about the most comprehensive one I've ever seen...it is nine pages long! The car was originally purchased at the Roslyn NY Mercedes dealer- Rallye Motors. (The car came to me with the adhesive "Rallye Motors" metal trunk badge still attached. I have removed it but it is included with the sale.) the CarFax lists 29 service history records and 61 "detailed records" with all the appropriate odometer readings and dates listed. Every Mercedes recommended and other service under the first owner and mileage readings (and the ones since I purchased) are recorded on the CarFax.
The CarFax report also reports two minor "accidents"...one on 1/13/2014 and a second one just two months later on 3/20/2014. The prior owner was an elderly woman and the two minor fender benders were merely parking lot "oopses". After the second one, her family revoked her driving privileges. The car retains all its original VIN stickers so no metal panels needed to be replaced. Only the plastic front bumper cover is not original. The car was retained for two more years with her home help aide driving her around. After that, the family determined that she had no more use for it and the car was sold, and I ultimately purchased it.
Shortly after purchase, I noticed an occasional shudder/misfire vibration from the engine...I brought it to the local Mercedes dealer and they suggested it COULD be the fuel distributor and quoted me $5K for replacement. Being knowledgeable about these cars myself, I knew given the symptoms it couldn't possibly be the fuel distributor and their quote was basically a "Hail Mary" dart thrown at the dartboard. I politely declined. Next I was referred by a friend to a local small independent Mercedes guru who thought it could be carbon buildup and a sticking valve. Given how little this car had been driven over the years, it sounded reasonable and I had him pull the head and he sent it out to a machine shop to be completely rebuilt and a new head gasket installed. Also, since the head was already off, I opted to have the timing chain, tensioner, serpentine belt and belt tensioner all replaced as well.

Imagine both of our surprise (and my frustration) after doing all this work and the occasional miss remained! Both of us huddled over the engine bay watching the engine run...after a while scratching our heads, an apprentice came over, stuck his head in and looked around for a while and said "it looks like the harmonic balancer is occasionally hitting the crank position sensor"... Eureka! The harmonic balancer rubber section had come partly loose from the metal hub and was occasionally moving in ways it shouldn't. Long story short, the balancer and crank sensor were then replaced and the car ran perfectly thereafter. I was pretty annoyed by the well over $3K of exprense with the head work but that was balanced by knowing that the head, timing chain, etc, etc. were all brand new and now in perfect shape and importantly, had a brand new head gasket. Head gaskets are a known weak point in these M103 equipped cars, so with all these parts now new, I had the peace of mind that knowing it would run for many years and miles without problem.
Some other assorted items I had replaced given the car's age also include the following OEM factory Mercedes parts:
Distributor cap and the complete plastic cover assembly, new ignition coil, spark plugs and wires, Left and Right complete tie rod assemblies and center drag link, steering dampener, six new fuel injectors and O-ring seals, fuel in-tank strainer, fuel filter, Fuel EHA valve, EGR valve and lower engine bay encapsulation panel.

Other notable imperfections include a small scrape in the lower part of the rear bumper cover, and a small but poorly executed dent repair on the left rear fender (pictures show these things). Also, of note- the engine also has recently developed a small oil leak at the front upper timing chain cover. Additionally, it isn't easily seen in the pictures, but the paint clearcoat has failed- there are tiny "spider-like" scratches all over the car's clearcoat. The surface still shines, and it is not noticeable unless you are a foot or two from the car, but when you look closely you can see them. When Mercedes moved to a water based paint system, this became an all too common issue with this generation of cars. I was going to fix the oil leak and have the car re-clear coated, but have now found and purchased the car I originally REALLY wanted when I bought this 300E- the smaller 190E 2.6 Sportline with a 5 speed manual transmission.
I now have to make room for the new car, and this is sadly the one to go. It is really a great car. The ride and handling is amazing with all the Sportline goodies, the interior is pristine- the dash is perfect and the carpets and leather seats are beautiful. The M103 inline 6 pulls really hard, and sounds great. There is not a speck of rust anywhere. Still equipped with the original R12 air conditioning, the air blows frosty cold. Serious buyers are welcome to message me and arrange to view and test drive the car here locally in Eastern PA. I'm also happy to answer any additional questions.
**One added bonus for anyone who chooses the "Buy it Now" option...I had purchased a 23.7 gallon W124 500E factory gas tank to retrofit in the car to increase driving range...If you choose "Buy it Now", I'll throw in the extra fuel tank for free!

This car is NOT for sale locally, and whoever is the high bidder will win it. I will not execute a transaction outside of Ebay.
